Bordeaux blend's double blind

Tasted January 16, 2021 by pavel_p with 272 views

Introduction

A fun dinner with friends. Theme Bordeaux and Bordeaux blends. Wines double blind, except own bottle blind. Short notes only given the difficulty of focusing entirely on the wines in such nice company.

Flight 1 (9 notes)

White
2017 Peccavi Wines Chardonnay Australia, Western Australia, South West Australia, Margaret River
91 points
Double blind. Very pale yellow. Dry and fresh with a fair bit of acidity. Good minerality too. Just a touch of oak. Nice Chardonnay and pretty classic. I guessed 2017 Puligny Montrachet top end village, or lower end 1er.
Red
1995 Château L'Eglise-Clinet France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
flawed
Double blind. Clearly a bad bottle of a wine that was showing great only a few months back. This one was oxidative on the nose, on the palate noticeable alcohol but also elevated acidity. I thought this could not be a Bordeaux blend at all. NR. Group's # 8, My #8
Red
1999 Chateau Musar Lebanon, Bekaa Valley
Double blind. Cloudy and evolved color in the glass. Slightly oxidative nose. Fairly complex but not exactly pleasant on the palate, with some remaining dry fruit mixing with oxidative notes and some stewed vegetables.
I thought a poorly stored bottle of a 70s or early 80s Bordeaux off vintage. Then somebody said Musar, and it made sense.
I recall seeing this recently offered by Cru, and was wondering if I should take a case back then. Very glad I did not. NR

2000 Château Le Dome France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
90 points
Double blind. Elegant and Very smooth with fairly dry fruit and some spices. Tannins fully resolved and I was missing structure here. Not really my style but perhaps not a great bottle. Guessed Margaret River early 2000s.

1999 Castello dei Rampolla d'Alceo Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT
After having the 99 for the first time last fall, I managed to buy a case and took a bottle to a double blind tasting with theme Bordeaux blends to see how it would perform in a double blind setting. Recognized the Alceo as my own wine instantly. In direct comparison with the Wines preceding, this was not only darker in the glass but also a slightly darker fruit profile on the palate. Amazing depth, and a lively discussion at the table whether this was old or new world. Group’s #2, my #1

2014 Château Haut-Batailley France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
94 points
Double blind. Not sure how long this had been decanted but I thought this was showing excellent and ready to drink, and got the wine totally wrong. Elegant and slightly creamy, with already great balance and integration. I guessed top Pomerol late 90s. Would love to try this again, should be superb value. Group's #5, My #2.

2005 Domaine de Chevalier France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
92 points
Double blind. This had clearly more grip than the 2014 Haut Batailley preceding it. Dark fruit, some earth, robust structure. Approachable but will of course last a long time. I guessed left bank 2006. Group's #4, my #4

2003 Château Haut-Brion France, Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan
93 points
Double blind. Again clearly a left bank Bordeaux. This one was however showing more toasted oak. Good weight. Guessed again 2006 left bank. Group's #1, My #3.
Very well done for a 2003 Graves, not showing the overripe or even burned fruit some others do.

Double blind. I thought this was a touched cork, but could still see a nice left bank Bordeaux behind the taint. Group's #6, My #6
