2016 Sine Qua Non Deux Grenouilles USA, California, Central Coast

Rich and spicy. Depth of flavor was there but acidity as a whole was lacking.
Some phenolic bitterness provided some positive notes on the finish but as a whole I was a touch let down.

Very different from the rest of the lineup in a great way.
Terroir city. Earth and damp cherries dusted with some clay and mud.
The palate shows dark fruit that is well integrated as a whole. Excellent wine. Fun to try Keller PN.

2015 Pieve Santa Restituta (Gaja) Brunello di Montalcino Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Slightly modern styling. Lots of fruit with dark gray pepper, anise and dark road tar.
Palate was medium bodied and had nice acidity. Well made but overshadowed but the rest of the lineup.

Awesome showing.
Classic Cayuse uber funky styling. Nice under ripe cherries and stewed veg.
Long finish with a bitterness that everyone enjoyed. Killer juice.

2012 Sine Qua Non Syrah Stock USA, California, Central Coast

This never really showed its true potential for me.
The booze never totally blew off and the spice was overwhelming. So big...and we had higher alcohol wines that performed better.
Lots of spicy flamboyant red fruit, touches of sweet all spice and earth but the booze on the nose was too evident even after a six hour decant.
Palate showed similar qualities. Still a fun wine to try but obviously this bottle wasn't the ideal SQN example.

2008 Colgin Syrah IX Estate USA, California, Napa Valley

Wow. Yes. This out of the SQN and Cayuse showed the best but just by a nose.
Dark stewed black cherries, molasses, burnt caramel, autumn leaves and bloody steak on the nose.
Palate is completely in harmony and though at a whopping 15.8% on the bottle, there wasn't a rough edge in any sense of the words.
Long decadent finish that goes for 60 seconds. What a fantastic example of New World Syrah.
Sorry, I'd take Colgin (or Cayuse) over SQN most days of the week.

2013 Nine Suns Cabernet Sauvignon Houyi Vineyard USA, California, Napa Valley, St. Helena

Probably the most Napa wine of the night. Very juicy and ripe and fruit forward.
There were other subtleties in baking spices and graphite but for the most part this was a fruit bomb in all senses of the word.
While this would be right up the alley for many this wasn't hitting what I look for in a wine these days.
There was just too much fruit and the structure on the finish was lacking too - even for a 2013.

2014 Hundred Acre Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon "Deep Time" Kayli Morgan USA, California, Napa Valley

I really didn't want to like this wine mostly for reasons surrounding price increases and other less wine driven issues with HA.
But the wine really showed well. It was fresh and lively while being complex and layered.
Dark cola cherries and anise as well as pretty floral accents that were unique.
The palate was in perfect harmony even at this young stage.
Medium plus body while I still don't think this is worth $500+ it showed very well tonight and may only slightly change the way I see HA wines....but just the wines.

2016 MacDonald Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
97 points
Holy crap. Without a doubt this was mine and everyone's WOTN.
Again, with the hype and all surrounding MacDonald, I didn't want to love it ...especially as much as I did.
It was just so harmonious...so Napa without being everything I hate about Napa...
The wine had so many subtleties that with each sniff I found more and more profound.
Darker toned cherries and cassis, cola, anise, brown sugar, Umami and loads of Asian and Indian spices.
The palate was caressing in every way. Medium bodied but uber complex. So much going on.
The finish was perfect - no sense of alcohol with a dusting of tannins. Just WOW. The wine fux.
