Great Cornas Virtual Tasting

Chicagoland IL

Flight 1 - OK, not Cornas but it is Allegedly Spring so we need a White (1 note)

White
2015 Pierre Gonon St. Joseph Blanc Les Oliviers France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
90 points
Started out rich with lots of stone fruit, slightly floral and well spiced. More unctuous when popped-and-poured, more texture emerged an hour later, and the finish got longer. Upside from here.

Flight 2 - Young Clape (4 notes)

Red
2010 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
flawed
Seemed fine when opened at 4:30, dirty when tasted at 7, corky when re-tasted at 8:30. some thought it more bretty, but more corkiness is emerging.

2013 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Opened 3 hours before tasting. Black plum, olive, black pepper and roasted meat. Still firm throughout, slightly backward but opening up slowly. Good+ depth. Better 2023 forward.

2016 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas Renaissance France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
Opened 3 hours before tasting. Black cherry and plum with roasted meat, black pepper and licorice. So much here with good weight and great balance. Wow, what a friendly wine, which surprised me because it was so completely backward when tasted two years ago in Mauves.

A wine of intense concentration with impeccable balance. Nicely spiced with black, red and blue berries everywhere, nicely supported by smoked game character. Everything is already in balance, but clearly even more in reserve. I know I enjoyed this more than did the others tonight. 94 point wine for me by the end of the night (6 hours after opened), and I think there is further 95+ point potential, better 2025-2050.

Flight 3 - Mid Aged Clape (2 notes)

Red
2000 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
90 points
Black cherry, licorice and roasted beef aromas, similar flavors with slightly less intensity. Rounded and softer than the other vintages, still showing wonderful balance, even if with much less concentration.

1995 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Fresh and mature black cherry and plum with smoked beef ribs, ancho mole, with anise and clove hints. So much here with exceptional balance and persistence. Great when tasted after open 3 hours, then even better when finished two hours later.

Flight 4 - Other Cornas (2 notes)

Red
2005 Alain Verset Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
88 points
Classic Old School style Cornas with roasted meat, some firm tannins and lots of power. In context of tonight's great wines, this wine just comes up slightly short on charm and elegance. But still, this paired so perfectly with smoked meat.

2017 Alain Voge Cornas Les Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
So precocious when first tasted (open 3 hours) with gobs of red and black cherry, licorice, Chinese five spice and roasted meat. The opulence and flamboyance faded with a few more hours in glass, and the density and volume really started shining. Still at least 5+ years from its peak, but so much here, 92-93+ point potential.

Flight 5 - Chaillots (2 notes)

Red
2012 Thierry Allemand Cornas Chaillot France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
92 points
A wine of supreme elegance and grace, seemed older than 2012 with its mature fruit, cooked mushroom and leather character. I was surprised to see this 2012, thinking it older from a lesser vintage, but still greatly appreciate its balance and charm. Enjoy by 2027.

Simultaneously massive and elegant. Seems to be opulent to start, but then...bam... so much structure plus depth comes through almost immediately. Lots and lots here, this wine kept unfolding and softening with more time in glass. Tasted blind, I thought it from 2015 based on tannic structure. More interesting than exciting at first, this was really great 4-5 hours later.
