ESTG Northern Rhône

Tasted March 20, 2022 by Eric with 238 views

Introduction

A rare opportunity for an in-person tasting. We all tested in advanced and got together for a nice evening, fun wines, and giving Adam a hard time.

Flight 1 (3 notes)

While we gathered, there were a few whites to get us going.

White - Sparkling
N.V. José Michel & Fils Champagne Cuvée du Père Houdart France, Champagne
Mmm, frothy and fresh, a very fine and creamy Champagne, great way to start out, and a few of us had our curiosity piqued by this producer.

White
2014 La Chablisienne Chablis Grand Cru Les Preuses France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
Mmm, love this, such perfect energy and clarity. Absolutely delicious, mineral, citric, deep, perfectly in balance.

White
1981 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage Blanc Chevalier de Sterimberg France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Wow, what a great bring by Bill. Super low fill, some caramel coloration, but this was drinking fantastically well. Mature, lovely, not at all oxidized. Fabulously secondary and complex.

Flight 2 (2 notes)

We started off with a lovely pair of 1990's.

Red
1990 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Crozes-Hermitage Domaine de Thalabert France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Crozes-Hermitage
95 points
I so distinctly remember when Susan brought this wine to a tasting in 2003, and I absolutely flipped over it. Well here we are 19 years later, and this is still drinking insanely well. Mmmm, cracked pepper, smoked meat, deeeep, heavy bass notes, earthy, yet soaring, smoky, mushroom and sous bois, this is just so, so good!

1990 M. Chapoutier Hermitage La Sizeranne France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
High pitched at first, black pepper, black cherry. Jason thought it was maybe corked, and I too caught some slightly off aromas. However it never seemed like TCA was at work here. If anything, with air this did gain sweetness and depth, nice, not outstanding.

Flight 3 (1 note)

A brief Southern ringer.

Red
2001 Le Clos du Caillou Côtes du Rhône Villages Cuvée Unique Les Roches Rondes France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône Villages
A funny little Southern Rhône ringer in a Northern Rhône tasting. A little dirty smelling at first, raspberry ganache, white pepper, pine, quite sweet, especially in comparison to the much more savory Syrah we had before and after. (Now had someone tracked down the Syrah specific Cuvee from this producer, that would have been a fun ringer to play with.)

Flight 4 (3 notes)

A pair of Cote Rotie and a St. Josepj.

Red
1998 Michel & Stéphane Ogier Côte-Rôtie Cuvée la Belle Hélène France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
97 points
Wowza, gunpowder, floral, explosive, amazing, meaty, racy acidity. This is everything you want in Côte-Rôtie, sexy with remarkable lightness and acid driven energy. Compared to the basic Ogier, this is a fairly oaked up luxury cuvee, and 24 years later you can still sense some of that oak signature. However, certainly for a few of us, this was the standout wine of the evening.

2001 Eric Texier Côte-Rôtie Vieilles Vignes France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
Black pepper, funky, animal, reductive, finishes explosively with cherry and bright acid. Pleasing but very linear in comparison to the Ogier.

2011 E. Guigal St. Joseph Vignes de L'Hospice France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph
This was in a tough flight. On the plus side, it is a textbook Syrah. Juicy, bright cherry, nice acid, beautiful but not profound, but overall nicely balanced with excellent tipicity.

Flight 5 (3 notes)

And finishing out the reds.

Red
2000 E. Guigal Hermitage France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Mmm, I love the basic Guigal Hermitage which seems to do so well with age. Dry, tannic, smoky, meaty, love the nose, dusky.

2003 Delas Frères Hermitage Marquise de la Tourette France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage
Cracked pepper, cherry, super young, juicy. It has none of the flaws of the hot 2003 vintage but also seems to have barely evolved at this point.

Red
2000 Noël Verset Cornas France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas
Well this was a treat. Reductive and rubbery at first, mmm, 20 minutes of air did this well, here we go, getting dark and more feral, olive, game, deep black cherry. Fun and wild!

Flight 6 (2 notes)

And then a pair of Madeira and a short 3 hour seminar from Jason.

White - Fortified
N.V. Rare Wine Co. (Vinhos Barbeito) Madeira Historic Series Boston Bual Special Reserve Portugal, Madeira
I just love Bual, tangy and brothy with that beef/cooked-onion thing. Really nice energy and weight.

Thick, maple syrup, delish. Malmsey richness for sure.
