A lovely drop. This smelt a bit fresher, less oxidative than usual - perhaps because it was fairly newly disgorged, with a very chalky, stony mineral tones to the nose, along with some stone fruit - think yellow peach - apples, and a touch of kumquat, all ringed with a little bit of spice. A really entrancing nose. The palate too felt really fresh and linear, with a spine of lemon acidity and beautiful stony mineral strecthing its way through bright expressions of green apples and limes. As always, there was plenty of power and depth to the chapmpagnem but this was wed to lovely freshness and purity. Together with a nicely fine mousse, the wine presented itself both with a delicious open, generous fullness, as well as having at the same time a really nice sense of cut and definition, with that deep mineral structure to it. Absolutely lovely - it dissapeared from the bottle very quickly.

Another lovely bottle from the case - I am going through these a little too fast. The nose here showed nice tones of toasted nut and butter, plenty of chalky, earthy mineral notes, and then melons, apples and something that reminded me of breadfruit, all these traced with a fresh whiff of lemons and a little spiciness at the edges of the bouquet. Lovely. The palate was delicious too - there was a great sense of cut and definition to it, with a real bedrock of chalky, stony mineral undercutting rich Meursault tones of cream, butter and white, again seasoned with a little bit of spice. This was a perfectly balanced and integrated mouthful, with bright, but perfectly integrated acidity threaded through those generous flavours, all the way into long, full finish of mineral and spice. A lovely wine, showing wonderfully well in its relative youth.

2010 Domaine Humbert Frères Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Estournelles-St.-Jacques France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Again impressive, but this needs some time still. It did have a lovely nose, especially with a little bit of time in the decanter, showing entracing aromas of spice and herb, earth and meat, along with sweet blushes of red cherries and darker berries, all shaded by just a hint of wood spice. Lovely stuff. The palate was fresh, lively and very juicy, with dark cherries and berries, spice and earth, all unfolding in a full, generous mouthful. This had showed the best qualities of the 2010 vintage - bright acid; full powerful fruit; lots of transprent purity - yet it still felt way too young, with the structural elements standing out a buit, and the wine threteaning to close up at times, especially towards the finish, which started out super long and nicely spiced, but later clenched up quite a bit. Still though, a great little expression of the terroir, which will get better in 5-10 years.
