2002 Union Champagne de Saint Gall Champagne Grand Cru Cuvée Orpale Blanc de Blancs France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

Quite rich and opulent; comes across as a Champagne of a decidedly more old-school style. I like the roundedness, hint of brioche, orchard fruit, and slight nuttiness. Not quite as complex on the palate as the grands marques that I'm more familiar with, but an excellent showing from a new-to-me producer.

Lot LPM02. I really like the attack on this wine; it feels like there's a certain richness that's to come on the palate, but unfortunately it doesn't quite show up. Despite the relatively low 2.4 g/L dosage, there's definitely more weight on this than I would have guessed.

I think I expected even a little more out of this, so all in all I was disappointed, but this is definitely no slouch of a wine. It took a few hours of air to really get going, and I would readily expect this to still be on the upswing tomorrow. Quite structural and tannic; this doesn't show as much fruit as I would have liked, but the fruit seemed to emerge over the course of the evening.

My favourite nebbiolo of the night -- this is just hitting its stride, with clean red fruit, and plenty of youthful nebbiolo structure. Still feels like there's upside here, but for drinking now I really like the overall balance. In contrast to the 1988 Rabaja, this started to clamp down over the course of the evening, to the point you were getting a lot of tannic intensity on the finish.

Almost tasted oxidized at first, but this really started to get itself put-together over the course of the evening. Very structural, with a slight plummy note, and lots of relatively coarser tannins. It definitely tightened up and showed much better with air over the evening. Crazy frustrating how hard it is to predict what kind of air treatment to give these mid-aged nebbiolos.
