Flight 1 - Sonne Seuzach , Switzerland (5 notes)

A gem of a wine treasure trove of old beautifully matured wines. Prices are a gift to wine lovers. Warrants a visit

1959 Château Latour Grand Vin France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac
96 points
Sourced pristine from the impeccable cellar of Sonne Seuzach , Switzerland . In neck level and solid cork albeit fully wet.
Impressively young and would have guessed 1990 Pauillac if we did not know. Firm wine , soft austerity that draws you in and this is not a wine that advertises and screams but a wine one need to search beauty as if behind a veil. Soft dark fruit, light liquorice kiss, very little earthy touch . Impressive and an experience to say the least . 95-96

1970 Pétrus France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
98 points
Sourced pristine from the impeccable cellar of Sonne Seuzach , Switzerland . We debated long between this and the 1975 but as the level was in neck for this we said 1970.
A magnificent wine and at times reminded us of a Syrah ( blind we would have said 1980s Guigal La Landonne) with soft meaty and smoky edge. Healthy and lively albeit the age shows. Dark coloured , dark fruited and with a singing nose. A masterclass of a wine and an easy 98 and frankly with another 20 years of life.

1977 Bodega Weinert Malbec Estrella Argentina, Mendoza
94 points
Requires a lot of decanting and one hour is a minimum.
Sourced pristine from the impeccable cellar of Sonne Seuzach , Switzerland.
The owner of the cellar suggested this as the best Malbec ever made. The OG as an Argentinian friend later called it.. 30,000 bottles made after 19 years in large 2500-6000 litre casks and the next vintage made was the 1994 and wine that the cellar owner said is far too young.

The wine feels like an amarone from 2000. Young vibrant , punchy and frankly felt it can go another 20 years like this. Only Penfolds Grange has this level of longevity in our experience. Dark fruited, soft rich, 14.5% alc , well round albeit with energy of a 10yr old. This is definitely one of those experiences . 93-94

2001 Sine Qua Non Ventriloquist USA, California, Central Coast
94 points
Sourced pristine from the impeccable cellar of Sonne Seuzach , Switzerland .
A decade since we tried this last ( Papies 94) and shows no sign of letting go. Massive rich and elevated , a nose that sings and a wine that demands attention and this is not for the faint of heart. We do feel this been at the first decade of his winemaking lacks the elegance ( for Grenache) of the later made wines which are a lot more refined and beautiful albeit share the same power and intensity. 94 and shows no sign of ever ageing

White - Sweet/Dessert
1929 Château d'Yquem France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
100 points
Sourced from the impeccable cellar of Sonne Seuzach , Switzerland . Top shoulder level and with fully wet but solid cork.
Where does one begin to describe this and even more how does one rate it. Dark in colour and shines through the early century whiter than normal bottle with all the hand made flaws ( the bottle is itself a story) . Rich but with impressive acidity, rich apricot, honey. An exceptional experience and albeit one can argue about the wine the experience and the emotion it invokes can only be described as perfect. 100

Flight 2 - Taverne Zum Schafli, Wigoltingen (5 notes)

2 Michelin Stars and a wine cellar to match at great prices.

2018 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
96 points
Served blind. Went with Chablis Grand Cru 15yrs old..
Impressive as always Raveneau at this level and the wine felt more evolved than a 5yr old in the sense that oak was fully assimilated and the fruit was developed. Vibrant still of course , firm and with an elegance across . A beautiful wine that proves the love affair we have with them. 96-97

2017 Domaine Leflaive Chevalier-Montrachet France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru
94 points
Tasted blind and was the selection of the Sommelier of Taverne Zum Schafli, Wigoltingen. We went for 5yr old Puligny-Montrachet from a semi modernist like Lucien Le Moine as the smoky/toasty oak was very much in the forefront. And there lies for us the issue with this wine at this stage and hence our 94 in what otherwise is a magnificent wine. The toasty oak and the bright citrus render the wine a touch one dimensional and rob it of the magic. We feel this needs another 3-5 years to shed this and then will be hopefully in the higher 90s . Great to see the premox issues behind this great estate. 93-94

1989 Château Margaux France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
98 points
Tasted blind . We did go for Bordeaux straight away albeit the direction was split and in no way did we ever think this was an 89. Nicol went Margaux 95 , Andreas to Pomerol early 2000s . Fascinatingly we had this wine a year ago ( Papies 98) and we then saw it as more evolved and earthy. On the day the herby side was there ( the argument was if this was due to high cab franc or just a Margaux) but the wine was not that earthy or secondary if nothing else was a lot more energetic and the fruit was a lot more pronounced. Elegant and effortlessly balanced and a magical wine for sure . Amazing 98+

1990 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
100 points
Tasted blind. We went for Guigal La La and argues over vintage but the note from the start was that irrespective of which La La it is or which vintage this was a perfect wine. We actually thought it was a younger than 1990 .
The hall marks of a La La from Guigal are there , smoky , roars meat , spice , night fruit and all wrapped up in this effortless balance these wines deliver with good age. Magnificent as always and a wine we have rated 99 twice before ( 2017 & 2021) finally joins its other siblings at the perfect score room. Exceptional and with a lot of life ahead.

1989 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie La Mouline France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie
98 points
Tasted blind. The issue here was was it a Guigal La La or a Chave Hermitage as the usual Guigal Oaky dynamic was not that prominent. We went with La La. We have tried this wine twice before and rated perfect ( 2015 & 2021) and we wonder whether the wine is staring to tail of it just the bottle here was more evolved than normal. Probably the latter albeit the cellar of Taverne Zum Schafli, Wigoltingen is perfect and sourced from excellent provenance. Could well be that it was also eclipsed by the perfect 1990 La Mouline that was served side by side . Impressive and supremely elegant as always and albeit we did not find it perfect this time we did feel it was magnificent in its softer and lighter side too. 98

A real gem of a place and for us the Ciau del Tornavento of Switzerland and this is the highest honour we can grant to any restaurant. Exceptional wine cellar at wine lover welcoming prices

2011 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru
96 points
Tasted blind at Gupf, Switzerland .
Guessed Le Clos , 2017. Bright full of energy and no way this is 12 years old. Lightest touch of oak on the background, light caramel, touch smoky, bright citrus, exceptional nose , mineral, saline and an exceptional wine from start to finish. A lot of life ahead here and elegance from start to finish. 96

2012 Cantina Terlan Terlano Terlaner I Grande Cuvée Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Terlano
97 points
Tasted blind and perplexed us to pin down especially when a couple of hints were given . We did discuss the possibility this being a Terlan Pinot Bianco Rarita but was very diff to pin. We did felt gutted not to go for Terlan as this is ( especially their Chardonnay Rarity from the 90s) our favourite white wine producer .
Rich texture akin to a semillon but with a fresher and brighter feel, citrus , soft grassy edge on the finish. Open and expressive wine , welcoming and effortlessly balanced and with an elegance akin to a Le Montrachet . We love how this has evolved and frankly our guess is that this is a wine that requires a good decade in bottle before it can hit its full stride. Luckily we have been buying a cellaring a few of these ! 96-97 and a magnificent wine .

1996 Giacomo Conterno Barolo Riserva Monfortino Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo
94 points
Served blind. Nicoletta went staring to classicist Barolo 90s Andreas 1990 Gaja on account of feeling more modern. The wine felt quite rich maybe out of sync with development and not as elegant as the younger vintages we have had of the master of Barolo. Good wine just a touch not our style at this stage. 94

2007 Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon USA, California, Napa Valley, Oakville
93 points
Tasted blind with no decanting.
Andreas went do Quintarelli Alzero 2010 and Nicol for an 15y Amarone!
Punchy , ripe, juicy very much a dark fruited mix and on open slightly porty. We are not sure what to further say here but maybe this requires a long decant or maybe it’s just far too young albeit not austere or harsh. At this age is definitely not our style.
