June 11, 2023 - A pre-50 pre Birthday Celebration; 6/9/2023-6/11/2023 (Around Zurich Area): Served blind. Nicoletta went staring to classicist Barolo 90s Andreas 1990 Gaja on account of feeling more modern. The wine felt quite rich maybe out of sync with development and not as elegant as the younger vintages we have had of the master of Barolo. Good wine just a touch not our style at this stage. 94

May 15, 2023 - Young, fresh and powerful, benefitting from a 6+ hour decant but still needed time to unwind in the glass. I could not help but recall the 2004, also given a perfect score when I tasted it a year or so ago. I simply cannot imagine anything more from a Nebbiolo. Dried cherries, roasted herbs, licorice. Powerful, silky, seamless and with an endless finish.

Big and sappy for Nebbiolo, somber with layers of dark fruit, terrific acidity, and ripe, chocolatey tannins. At once the wine was accessible yet full of promise due to its massive underlying tannins. Impressive, powerful wine. In its eternal nature and its taking ages to unwind, it reminded me of the 1990 La Chapelle that I drank recently.

November 13, 2021 - White Truffles & Nebbiolo - 2021 Edition (Chicago, IL): 8+ hours in the decanter and this is decadently rich and powerful. Huge aromas of cherry and plum, spice and florals. Rich fruit is balanced by chewy tannin. Long, thundering finish. So great but even better in a decade.

2/23/2006 (link)(Giacomo Conterno Barolo Monfortino Riserva) Nose is somewhat reticent but if you sniff and move your glass around you get some roses, iron, spice, hazelnut & some hints of iodine. Very velvety texture and extreme concentration with some big-time clamping down tannins on the finish. The fruit is there but only hints at what is to come. Remarkable quality but when will this be ready?
