Flight 1 (11 notes)

White
2009 Hubert Lamy Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Derrière Chez Edouard Blanc France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
93 points
Excellent freshness and minerality despite the warmer vintage. Well-balanced, focused citrus fruit, was in the minority who preferred this over the Michelot.
White
2010 Domaine Michelot Meursault Les Narvaux France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault
90 points
Textbook rich, buttery Meursault that was a little too fat and creamy for me, but was a crowd favourite among others. Very tropical fruit.
Red
1998 Monthélie-Douhairet-Porcheret Monthélie 1er Cru Le Meix Bataille France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Monthélie 1er Cru
89 points
Earthy, rugged dark red fruit that was a little tired. Guessed early '90s Gevrey.
Red
1994 Monthélie-Douhairet-Porcheret Pommard 1er Cru Les Fremiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru
90 points
From magnum. I sequenced this together with the Monthelie because I thought they tasted similar, turned out they were from the same producer. Autumnal, cool dark red fruit with dusty tannins; felt it had more life than the '98 Monthelie so went for '00 Volnay.
Red
2006 Mongeard-Mugneret Gevrey-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
90 points
Got this right as a '06 Gevrey. Rustic, old-school style with firm tannins, some savoury bacon, forest floor notes and autumnal cherry fruit.
Red
2003 Domaine des Perdrix Vosne-Romanée France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée
88 points
Quite dark and rich with blue fruit so guessed MSD for this, but thought it was from a cooler year like '07. Not the most refined Vosne.
Red
2012 Faiveley Latricières-Chambertin France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru
flawed
Seemed a little cooked to me, not as fresh and energetic as I would expect from a new Faiveley GC. Tasted like a wine from the late '90s with slightly pruney fruit.
Red
2002 Dominique Laurent Volnay 1er Cru Les Brouillards Vieilles Vignes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru
91 points
My contribution. Signature Laurent toasty oak on the nose, chewy tannins but with attractive maraschino cherry fruit. Fresh and structured that most guesses were in the early '10s.
Red
2005 Louis Jadot Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Sentiers France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
89 points
My extra. Thought this would have been an easy guess as '05, a tannic monster of a wine that wasn't very giving. Unintegrated oak on the nose, some plummy fruit on the palate. Built like a Bordeaux and I am not sure if this wine will ever come around.
Red
2013 Domaine Marc Roy Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Alexandrine France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin
94 points
Perfumed, spice-laden nose with a silky, sensual texture that most including myself were in Vosne. Some blood iron notes emerged with air so I thought feminine Gevrey from a great vintage like '10. Superb balance and by far the most complete wine on the night.
Red
2009 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton-Maréchaudes France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
89 points
A brooding wine with some rustic and rough tannins. Olives, liquorice notes that made this a rather masculine brute of a wine that didn't give much pleasure. Guessed 2012 Volnay.
