Right Bank Bordeaux Tasting

Tasted January 23, 2024 by Francophile1 with 61 views

Introduction

An educational tasting event of all right bank Bordeaux wines. There were also two non-right bank ringers included in the line up and one white Burgundy palate cleanser.

Flight 1 - Right Bank Bordeaux Line-Up (Single Blind) (14 notes)

Red
2000 Château La Conseillante France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Tasted single blind. Young, ripe, touch of prune, plush, fruit is more on the reddish side than black or blue. Tasted older than wine #2.
Red
2009 Château Canon-la-Gaffelière France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted single blind. Young. Pure grapey fruit. Gobs of dark fruit. Touch of sweetness on the backend.
Red
1990 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Tasted single blind. Wow. Knock out nose. Lovely mature aged Bordeaux. Had this not been a right bank tasting, I would have called this left bank. Perfectly aged, wonderful aromas, touch of brett, fully resolved long finish. Awesome!

Red
2007 McKenzie-Mueller Cabernet Franc USA, California, Napa Valley
Tasted single blind. Young. Black fruit. Noticeable oak. Candied black cherry fruit on the finish. Tastes like a new world wine. Turns out it was a right bank ringer. Easy to detect.
Red
2010 Château Gombaude-Guillot France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Tasted single blind. Brambly fruit. Tannic. Sweet red fruit.
Red
2009 Bortolussi St. Émilion Grand Cru Lucia France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted single blind. Black as pitch. Noticeable alcohol on the nose and finish. Thick, viscous. Almost need a knife and fork to drink it.
White
2015 Domaine Matrot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Tasted single blind. Palate cleanser midway through the right bank wine line-up. Deep & rich flavor profile with a slightly sweet & oily finish with a touch of effervescence.
Red
1999 Château Pavie France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted single blind. More age than others based on resolved tannin. Black olive, pepper, touch of prune on the finish. There is a peculiar and almost weird character on the finish that I cannot describe??
Red
2005 Château Figeac France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted single blind. Plush, balanced, harmonious. A lovely wine.
Red
2006 Château L'Evangile France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Tasted single blind. Good nose, black fruit. Maybe a touch of volatile acidity on the backend?
Red
2005 Château La Croix St. Georges France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol
Tasted single blind. Great earthy nose with red fruit. You can taste the terroir in the glass. My #2 wine of the night. I thought it was Figeac.
Red
2004 Chapelle d'Ausone France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted single blind. Good wine, but full disclosure at this point in the line up, my palate was shot with all of these Merlot based wines. I wish this had come earlier in the line up as I have always enjoyed Chapelle d'Ausone.
Red
2010 Château Quinault L'Enclos France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Tasted single blind. Sulfur, Soy, Yuck. I poured it out.
Red
2008 Alienor Grand Vin USA, California, North Coast, Lake County
Non-blind. This wine makes for a fantastic ringer for a right bank Bordeaux tasting. The unfortunate part was the group knew it was a California wine and it was the only one in the line-up that was non-blind. I am convinced this biased the group. That said, this is fully mature with reddish fruit and a touch of brett. My only wish was that it was served fully blind to prevent label bias.

Closing

For me, the top 3 wines of the night were as follows:
#1: '90 L'Evangile (hands down the best wine of the night)
#2: '05 La Croix St. Georges
#3: '05 Figeac

Many in the group thought the '99 Pavie was wine #2, but I didn't agree.

A fun night, but I've had my fill of right bank Bordeaux wines for a while. Not as bad as drinking CDP all night long, but close enough to turn one's stomach to plush Merlot.
