Introduction

This was a nice little dinner with the four of us marking a period of change. Michelene generously cooked a lovely meal and we shared some great stories late into the night over some fantastic wines.

Flight 1 (7 notes)

White - Sparkling
2008 Champagne Copinet Champagne Monsieur Leonard France, Champagne
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over 45 minutes. Lean and taut with apple and quince, though more chalk driven by the minerality. Fairly straightforward without a lot of personality.
White - Sparkling
2008 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs Brut France, Champagne
98 points
Shimmering gold color. Drank a couple glasses over 90 minutes. Oh, my, word....I am not going to regret loading up on these. I'd been holding off, and holding off on opening one of these for some time. But many if not most of the '08's are drinking well now and this was loudly calling my name. I wasn't taking any notes at the time, but there are a few thoughts that come to mind: wow, riveting, compelling, the real deal. This had an immense nose with an explosive bead. Tons of gorgeous toast, creme caramel, brioche, almond cream, nuthorns, splendid ultra refined sea spray and minerality, subtle floral notes and marzipan, bright, refreshing, long and wistful. Glorious, and eveything I'd hoped for. Now the clock starts to see if this can surpass the brilliant 2002 in time. 98(+)pts.

White
2021 Cantina Terlan Pinot Bianco Tradition Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol
91 points
Light gold color. Drank a glass over an hour. Fresh, green apple, lemon zest, green herbs, stone, brisk with nice acidity.
Red
1999 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton
93 points
Medium red plus color with a 2mm clear edge. Drank a couple glasses over 2 hours. It's been forever since I had one of these, and I had wondered back then where this was going - and did it still need more time. Well, I can say in this case anyway, that this bottle was much better than back in 2015. In fact, this kept getting better in glass tonight. There's some high toned dried forest floor driving the nose along with plenty of tobacco leaf, cool cherry, and savory dark berries. The palate is medium bodied with dried leaves, cherry, tobacco, dark berries, savory, crushed rocks, and still present medium grained tannins. In great shape and really fun to see the evolution. This can go 5 years hands down, and probably ten.

Red
2011 Arterberry Maresh Pinot Noir Maresh Vineyard USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills
95 points
Light-medium ruby color. Drank a couple glasses over 2 hours. I'd been waiting for the '11 Maresh Vineyard to really deliver, and over multiple bottles it was always good, but never truly memorable. Well that finally changed. The quintessential Oregon experience, for me anyway, was on full display. This had a stunning perfume of wild strawberries, mountain raspberry and blooming wild flowers, with pretty lifted spice notes. The palate is tart and the cool red berries shine in their purity and focus, draped in spice and rose petals with dried forest floor, the weightless palate defies logic with the depth of its flavors and the soaring finish. One to just sit sip by itself and savor every last drop. Outstanding. 95 to 96pts.

Red
1970 Château Rausan-Ségla France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux
89 points
Medium red color with a 5mm clear edge. PNP, drank a couple glasses over 75 minutes. This was a bit wonky to start, and it took 20 minutes or so to shake itself off and start to show a bit. There's a little mint, dried cherry and red currants, with subtle earth on the nose. The palate is light-medium bodied, soft, fully integrated, soft red fruits, cherry, subtle raspberry, s touch of Mandarin orange peel, sublte wood spice, elegant and charming. In the end this was a nice wine to ponder over with the palate being superior to the nose. The palate is right at 90 though the nose doesn't quite make the mark. 89-90pts overall.
White - Sweet/Dessert
1971 Château de Rayne-Vigneau France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
flawed
Medium plush amber color. Followed a small glass from 375ml. Some burned brown sugar, honeyed, nutty and sherried. Not quite right. No score.
