Introduction
Spring break isn't over just yet at UCLA because we are hosting a rosé wine tasting at brvino! For this one, we compared 4 interesting and/or educational styles. We had a Provence rosé to represent the 21st century's hype vision of pink wines. Next, drawing a parallel to our Pinot Noir tasting, we had a Pinot rosé from California. We also added a sparkling wine, but to make it more interesting, it was a Pinot as well: Cremant d'Alsace (now parallels to our sparkling wine tasting). Lastly, we could not go without Tavel and, to be honest, it was my own first time trying Tavel rosé as well.
Flight 1 (4 notes)
On the palate, it’s much more grapefruit-y with medium+ acid and medium- body.
Bitter aftertaste.
7/18
On the palate, it’s more viscous and less acidic. There is also a touch of sweetness now. Some more butter cherry and even red plum.
I don’t think this is Pinot showing, I think it’s just the winemaker’s choice.
6/18. I’m not a big fan.
On the palate, it’s fun and exciting. Grapefruit, honey, and even a little bit of ginger.
I like this one.
8-/18
On the nose, I get redcurrant, rose hip, and hibiscus. There is also some cottage cheese or brioche. Blackberry and confiture.
On the palate, hibiscus tea takes over. There is a fair amount of bitterness, perhaps a touch of tannin. Black tea and slight meatiness.
The finish is somewhat long with hibiscus and rose hip tea reappearing.
8-/18, but I’m not convinced.
Closing
Unfortunately, I did not love the line-up. AIX was exactly what I expected it to be and the same could be more or less said about the other wines, too. Ryder was my least favorite as it was slightly sweet and quite dull. Cremant was interesting but the notes seemed slightly chaotic and disarranged. Lastly, Tavel was just bitter and hibiscus forward more than anything else.
Well, they couldn't all be winners!
