Introduction

Our tasting group assembled a quasi vertical of Lynch Bages '82, '88, '89' '95. and '96 with a bottle of '02 Newton Puzzle as a "Mystery" wine, Tasted oldest to youngest.

The wines were accompnied by a beef roast and accompanying appetizers

Flight 1 (6 notes)

This bottle was opened but not decanted about an hour before we tasted it. The cork was completely saturated. One of the tasters thought the wine was slightly corked but he was the only one. The wine was drinking very well and still has plenty of fruit with layered flavors. Nice balance and complexity. If you have these I am not sure you should be pushing the drinking window too much farther.

This bottle was opened but not decanted about two hours before it was tasted. I was apprehensive because my two previous bottles of this wine were spoiled. This bottle was fine. The color was in line with what you would expect from a twenty year old bottle. Flavors were nicely balanced with plenty for fruit and spice remaining. Although this was my least favorite of the wines it was the first to disappear.

This wine was something else. The bottle was opened but not decanted about two hours before we tasted it. This was a mistake, this wine is young enough to need a few hours in the decanter. I say that because this wine really improved over the course of the evening with the last sip being the best and really rocking. If I had any discipline I would have saved some of this baby for day two! Definitely my WOTN. The color was a little bricked. At first this wine gave very little on the nose and was pretty tight flavor wise. Later in the evening the wine developed into a beautiful thing. Layers of integrated flavors of cassis, dark fruits, leather and earth but with enough soft tannins to let you know that it had even more to offer. Delicious!

This bottle was decanted about 3 hours gbefore it was tasted. The wine was delicious and definately in it's drinking window. Flavor profile of spice and dark fruits, currants, earth. To me it seems that there is no rush to drink my other two bottles.

This bottle was decanted about 3 hours before it was tasted. Beautiful wine and my second place WOTN. Definitely the most aromatic of the wines tasted with an explosive nose of cassis and dark fruit. Like the '89 this wine continued to develop and improve over the course of the evening. Delicious layers of earth, spice and fruit with excellent balance and the backbone to go more years.

This wine as decanted for about 4 hours before we drank it. It was added to the Lynch Bages tasting as a "mystery" bottle. The style was definitely more new world with sweeter more extracted flavors. Lots of fruit with enough backbone to continue developing.

Closing

At the end of the evening all agreed that the Lynch Bages were excellent as a group and more enjoyable than a group of similar vintages of first growths we had at our last tasting. Another observation was the similarities and consistency between the different vintages of Lynch Bages.
