2010 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Nebbiolo
Very good. Haven’t had many good bottles of this wine lately and had forgot why I liked it. I think I prefer this wine younger when it’s still got the roses and dirt flavour and hasn’t yet changed to stewed fruit and tannins.

Not really digging this one. And I used to really like this wine. The 2006 and 2007 vintages seemed to be more Syrah focused with more structure and savouriness and I loved them. But this one seems more Grenache based. It's lighter bodied with more alcohol. Not sure if they've actually changed the blends or maybe it's just a reflection of the growing conditions in each vintage?

4/6/17, 5:37 PM - Thanks for the info! I'll keep an eye out for later vintages. I've also found that this cuvée can be inconsistent; maybe a reflection of the volume of bottles that are produced and perhaps that's a possible reason too.

I was excited to try this wine based on all the positive reviews. Darker garnet colour. Nose and palate were very sulphury and I suspect that there were some major reduction issues here. You could detect the Syrah qualities beneath the struck match flavours, but only barely. Disappointing. May have to give this wine another try in the future.

3/27/13, 8:05 AM - Thanks for your comment Frank. I'm more of an old world style wine drinker myself and this was actually the first California Syrah I've ever had. Based on what I'd heard I was looking forward to a rhone style Syrah with a Californian accent only to get hit with a big dose of Sulphur. I've been detecting sulphur in a lot of the wines I've been drinking lately and am wondering if this an attribute of so called "natural" wine making. I've been drinking a lot of those types of wine lately. With my limited knowledge of wine making I understand a lot of the naturalists don't rack their wines, which reduces its exposure to oxygen and can create sulphury qualities. Maybe Pax works this way?? The Wind Gap was also served (and stored) too warm at a restaurant so that might be part of the problem too. I've had a couple of other bottles served like this in the recent past with similar problems. I'll have to give this wine another try if I come across it again. I guess these frustrations are part of the allure of wine - if you always got what you wanted it wouldn't be such an interesting drink (and the good bottles wouldn't seem as good!).

3/27/13, 6:07 PM - Thanks for the suggestions Frank. I'll have to be on the look out for those. I live in Canada and started out drinking the local wines around British Columbia before getting heavily into French wine. There's just so many regions in France to explore that I just never got into anything from California. My wife and I are visiting San Francisco and came across this wine at a restaurant here. I'd read about it before so thought I'd give it a try. Thanks again.

3/27/13, 7:59 PM - Yeah it's still the Victorian era up here as far as the government's attitude around wine goes. Thanks for the offer on the 1/2 case suggestions. I come down to LA once a year or so to visit family and will definitely ask for some advice next time I come down. Take care.

A rather subtle bottle that only opened up near the end. I would suggest drinking these sooner rather than later.

12/28/12, 5:43 PM - Thanks for the heads up DREDWARDO. You seem to have some experience with older BM pinots. I have stocked up on some from the last few vintages. When do you think these would be at peak?

Light garnet colour. Pretty nose - undergrowth, mushrooms and red berries. The palate is balanced, but it was initially dominated by woody, greenness that I didn't like, but this went away with about an hour of air. Nice wine. I am optimistic about its potential to age. I had the 2006 of this wine at the 5 year mark and it was going strong. Looking forward to dipping into the rest of my supply over the next several years.
