Mid to deep cherry red with an umami-led bouquet. Savoury with fried banana, sweet spices, liquorice and praline and as the wine opened, some red fruits.
Medium-bodied, there is a beautiful intensity of fruit flavours giving expressiveness to the wine. Wood smoke joins sweet black fruits, baking spices and dried autumn leaves. The texture is melted chocolate which rises to firmer powdery tannins to take the wine home - long finish. As the wine opened (it was still cold from the cellar when decanted), I couldn't help but think there wasn't enough fruit to work with the wood and umami notes; whilst the tannin turned a little leathery, coating the tongue edges with a baked element of scorched clay from its Mediterranean heat.

This is past its prime, but in its heyday, this was a wonderful wine. Decanted and left to breathe about 45 minutes. Light, brown edges and over the hill. Alas, this has seen better days.

2012 Damilano Barolo Cannubi Nebbiolo
Damilano Single Vineyards (Ai Fiori (Langham Hotel on 5th Ave)): The crown jewel of the single vineyards from what I could tell. Interesting because early in my notes I had guessed a sandy soil vineyard and that is indeed what this is. 60 year old vines. Marked as a vineyard that produces wine that is drinkable quickly - the type of bottles you should be able to pnp. This is also herbal with some red fruits. There's a lovely elegance and structure to it. Young and still building character. Not at the level of the 2004 we had alongside which was just singing, but with potential. Nice acidity.

Bell pepper and white pepper on the nose with black raspberry, dry earth and leather notes. Lacks depth and finish on the palate although the tannins are no longer an issue. The flaws are better tolerated when paired with food, in this case a pasta with anchovies and mushrooms. Decanted one hour. 88-

2010 Freemark Abbey Cabernet Sauvignon Sycamore Vineyard Rutherford
Drank over two days, expecting wine to get better with air, but it really didn't. Tannic and finished tannic, little fruit. very disappointing. I have two more and will wait on opening them.

Thought it was a bad bottle upon opening, let it air out a bit and it became a decent but light malbec with a slightly metallic taste to it...

8/24/13, 3:40 AM - Probably you have a bad wine, in my opinion.
