Foillard’s “Cuvée Corcelette” comes from the eponymous climate in Morgan where Jean’s holdings include vines over 80 years of age. This is a stunning wine that is so Foillard in style: fresh and deep.

Popped and poured; enjoyed over two days. Consistent over both days but seemed to round out a little more on Day 2. The wine pours a deep, hazy ruby with a near opaque core and an almost fuchsia rim; medium viscosity with light staining of the tears and some signs of sediment. On the nose, the wine is developing with sensational notes of macerated raspberries, red flowers, carrot juice, celery root, chanterelles, granitic earth and minerals. On the palate, the wine is dry with medium tannin and medium+ acid. Confirming the notes from the nose. The finish is medium+ and so easy to love. Super balanced. Drink now and over the next 10+ years.
  • KillerJones commented:

4/27/24, 7:22 PM - Terrific note - you had me at carrot juice. I so want to open now.

The sediment surprises...but I will wait as suggested.

Opened this at 9am and decanted until dinner. Tannins were quite grippy when the bottle was opened, but wow was this good when dinner came around. Had all the trademarks of good Barolo with notable cherry and tar. This should age well for many years to come. If you drink it now, definitely decant for 4+ hours.

It is the end of summer. The wine was warmed & almost cloying in the heat…but I knew I wanted to taste this again.

Deep ruby with a medium+ intensity of black currant, blackberry, orange zest, herbaceous (peppers, grass), herbal (slightly menthol), charred wood and new leather.

Dry, full bodied, good acidity, with smooth tannins that creep up towards the end. Figs & sultanas come through on the finish that I wish was slightly longer.

Very sippable – my last bottle. Wondering if there’s a word that describes both pleasure & sadness at the same time…

Orange wine that is a 50/50 blend of Rkasitelli and Mtsvane. Aged and fermented in qvevri. Beautiful amber gold. Heady aromas of wildflowers, pineapple guava, cantaloupe, almonds and the incense wafting out of the backroom of an Arab souk. All that on the palate too, rich and racy at the same time. Absolutely mesmerizing. I have a headache this morning because our host left the bottle too close to me and I couldn't leave it alone. Serve at room temperature, not chilled.

Second bottle of a six pack and for the producer this is frankly a shade underwhelming. The oak character is the dominant characteristic, almost gluey at first which is odd given they say this sees French oak and I normally associate that with American oak. There is some light blackcurrant and spice we well, but it's not particularly expressive. Perhaps in a moody zone and needing more time?

Unfortunately, the half bottle I left overnight after air evacuation, did not survive very well. So, drink within a few hours of opening. Initially, high levels of taking were evident with coconut being prevelent on the palate accompanied by lesser amounts of strawberry. The second day experience was that of low fruit not offsetting the tannin and acidity. Not a great experience. My 88 was based on the first day experience.

On the nose the age is evident… with tertiary characteristics of earth, tobacco & almost a garrigue note.

Dark cherry & some green pepper from the Cab Franc. (damn you, IBMP!)

Quite impressive. I was sort of wanting to hate this wine, because I'm an old codger that is still hating on these pricier CdNV bottles, but honestly tasting this right now I feel this wine delivers for the price. Suave and pure, slightly fullish fruit, and some rose and soapy elements on the nose that are probably the result of the stem inclusion. I agree with Jasper Morris that the stems don't stick out nearly as much as you'd think for 100% whole cluster. Worth it.

Light straw gold, it offers apple, pear and mild ashy notes with a supple sweetness in the finish. Not as firm as I like my Chablis to be but a good companion for the sweet pecans and salty crumbled blue cheese in the salad course.

Come on people, let the world begin! How can you not feel some ignition in your soul when you have a bottle of wine with a rhinoceros on the label? Does no-one care for Ionesco in these heathen, 40 characters equals literacy days?

My own label would no doubt feature the polecat, the warthog or the stinkbug, but this has a rhinoceros, and you know it has to be good. Even if Zero Mostel isn't pouring for you.

'Oh yes', you mutter, rivetted to the concrete as always, 'get on with the wine you spastic f*^ker'.

Well, the wine pours (are you happy now?) with the usual Neb mix of cherry and a hint of brick and it is translucent as it should be. There is still some sparkle and that says 'I am alive'.

The nose and palate on day 1 are a little truculent but there is varietal cherry, a little strawberry on the finish and the middle is all cranberry goodness. There is some rose perfume and the tannins are a small tidal wave, ripe and fine, but perhaps lacking that element of nuttiness and sweetness in amongst the bitter that separates the good from the fine. Intensity is excellent but the length pulls up a bit. It is a Langhe people, so keep that in mind. If you were paying Barolo prices, riot and pillage, but this wine is a fairly priced Langhe and you gets what you pays for, but you also get a rhinoceros.

This wine really hums on day 2. You start to get those lovely, candied fruit aspects in addition to the above characters. The finish remains a touch short. However, the rhinoceros keeps you believing.

I keep thinking 'How can anyone not think that this is a far more complex grape than Pinot?' Apparently, they do, though and I guess that is good, because Neb from Piedmont is costly enough. Imagine if the Burg wankers really got onto the real thing. I believe the rhinoceros will keep them at bay and that is why, anytime you see a label with a rhinoceros, you should buy it, you should love it and you should feel some joy to be alive.

Of course, Ionesco's rhinoceros was a more sinister thing. It is thriving today. Those who are not of the Ionesco rhinoceros are happy little organisers of the trains.

Root Day - Darker crimson/garnet core out to a narrow light crimson edge. Nose is damp loam, forest floor, black fruit with a touch of blue added, warm spice, light herbs and milk chocolate. On the palate it’s soft and round with warm spices, ripe blue and black fruit, forest floor, soft newly tanned leather, light ripe tannins and medium acidity. This is quite a sophisticated wine - pleasant enough to enjoy on it’s own but rich and deep enough in flavour and texture to have with roasted poultry or duck or with something as fatty as pork or beef sausage. Drink now or let it develop for a couple of years.

I have found most '99s from the Médoc gracious and elegant in spite of a consensus which tended to dismiss them as light for early drinking. However, I was surprised that this bottle at close to 25 years was holding up so well. I can reproduce my TN from 2016 with very little editing. Open and quite complex aromatics with red fruit, summer flowers, a balsamic touch and a faint hints of varnish and cedar. Medium bodied, still traces of primary red fruit with the graciousness typical of the vintage, some secondary notes, silky texture and fresh acidity and some remains of tannic structure both enough for balance. No signs of decline in this bottle. Alas my last of a very rewarding stash of Poujeaux from the 90s. Very good.

This wine was on a big discount sale in BC Liquor store and I gambled by buying one. Opened it when I got home, had a sip and went straight back to the store and bought 6. Medium body with medium acidity and tight tannin. It has loads of savory flavors with energy to spare. It is a well balanced wine with great red and black fruits. It has the fruits, it has the energy, it has the structure supported by acidity and tannin. It pairs well from pizza/pasta to lamb. Heck, it even goes well with BBQ duck. This wine can be cellared for another 5 to 6 years, even though it drinks well now (with an hour of decanting). I still couldn't imagine there's such a deal from BC liquor store!

Suckling gave this 97 in '21...97! Did he even try the wine? My thoughts align more with Prof. Byron below.

The American oak is obvious, as it carries a toasted character. But the fruit is ripe - almost stewed - and black rather than red...hot year and it shows. Tannins still stand out...this bottle was better on day 2. Minimal browning @ edge.

This one will take time to come into what the '08 currently is.

Now, this was a warmer vintage for certain - I contemplated skipping this vintage for Bosconia instead. You know - 1/2 the price & I think Bosconia shows better in warmer years, no?

I keep an eye out for the '08 @ auction...still my fave.

I struggled to write this note. Opened and decanted and drank over the course of 12 hours. Tight and structured, with big fruit and tannins initially. It is evident that the fruit is excellent. Over time it mellowed and opened up a bit. The wine is well made, but something was off. I tasted with my wife (who is not aware of the 2020 issues and has a better palate than me) and she noticed it as well. At the outset, the wine had a gritty taste (if that makes sense) that hit in the back of my lower jaw. It also had a teriyaki/soy flavor that I've never experienced with any other wine. Over the course of the day, those flavors seemed to integrate a bit more, and to me there was the faintest hint of smoke in the background. Not pronounced like other smoke tainted wines I have had that taste like an ash tray, but lurking in the background as if you drank it after smoking a cigarette the day before.

Ultimately, I don't think the above doomed the wine - it was pleasant to drink and the qualities I noted were not overbearing or overwhelming. However, given what I tasted now, I wouldn't want to set bottles down for the long haul given that they are not like other young MB's and I don't know how the flavors I noticed will affect the wine in the long run.

2/18/24, 8:25 AM - Yes, I agree with you here, after tasting it last night - definite smoke taint...not certain how people are missing this here.

If you bought direct from winery, they are taking bottles back and giving credit here - as they should. I mean, they released this vintage knowing full well it had smoke taint.

Personally, I am appalled they even released this.

opened and decanted for 6 hours, took another 5 hours for consumption at a dinner party. some people could taste the smoke taint (ashy/gritty tannin mouthfeel) while others couldn't. I could faintly taste it (i've tasted through fire vintages at work), but nothing smoky on the nose. Found the wine to be very flat (almost like flat soda), zero intensity or layers, nothing of character. Short finish, bitter tannins, overall terrible wine.

Curious now if there is bottle variation because half of us here on cellartracker say its good and the other half think this is a wine that shouldve never been released.

Tasting at Deep Woods, once of the regions larger land holders, their estate wines showed good QPR, however their flag ship Chardonnay Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon were the real deal, all showed this wonderful creamy mid-palate.

Bright, citrus peel, high acid with a refreshing finish.

    Many thanks for the note.

Clearly young, but already approachable and balanced. A nice ripeness and plushness to the fruit with bracing acidity. Classic aromas and flavors.

A British Columbia winery that is new to me.
On nose: white grapefruit, steel and stony minerals.
On palate: all above flavour notes amplified, with green apple, lemon rind, blanched almonds.
Fine sleek, medium body displaying firm, present acidity at 2 years of age.....a civilized 12.7% alcohol.
Great shellfish wine....good match with prawns and scallops at dinner.

Classic Gruner Veltliner lemon/lime, pear, some green herb (maybe not mint, but could absolutely be lemon balm, bai maenglak aka Thai lemon basil, or tarragon) and wet stone on the nose with a little peppery dust (still trying to sensitize my nose to peppery aromas), although given the frigid nose that promises high-acid Alpine austerity, the texture is surprisingly round and juicy, and pretty freakin’ pleasant. The acidity is assertive but by no means aggressive, and the finish is pleasantly peppery. As the glass develops and warms up, a charming apple-juice character comes in, as well as a divisive cheesiness comes in on the nose, which is a bit of a no thank you for me. Otherwise this would be a solid 90-pointer.

Sancerre vs Pouilly-Fumé (K&L Wine Merchant - Redwood City): Some sort of white berries on the nose with white and orange-yellow flowers. Very lifted floral aromas accompanied by a gentle sweetness from some pears. This has a nice perfume to it.

Palate showed clean pear notes, a thick but light honey note, gentle spice on the finish with sparkly minerals. A gentle tree bark note and straw as well.

Loved the fruit on this. Second favorite of the lineup.

(I have been in that same spot tasting and feeling the wine was off - weird when no one says anything, right?)

    Cheers!

Served double-blind. The wine pours a straw color with no rim variation; medium viscosity with no signs of particles or gas. On the nose, the wine is of medium intensity with lemon meringue, pineapple, limestone-like minerals and a touch of burnt microwave popcorn. On the palate, the wine is dry; medium(?) acid and medium(+?) alcohol. There is a very peculiar textural element that I’m trying to get my head around. I think this wine may have seen some oak but the barrels would have to have been used. The finish was long and had a saline quality to it. What the hell is this? I could see this being Chardonnay from a new world producer doing some funny stuff or possibly a Marsanne from the Northern Rhone? I will say that there is a hint of a green herbal/vegetal thing on the finish that is making me consider Sauvignon Blanc or Gruner Veltliner but I don’t detect the acid being high enough for SB and there is no way this is Gruner. I’m sort of stumped here…so I went with Marsanne from France, Northern Rhone, Hermitage Blanc with 3-5 years of age and I wasn’t comfortable with it…but whatever. I know that I liked this wine, whatever it was! Dang…this was Sauvignon Blanc and Didier Dagueneau Pouilley-Fumé to boot!! I should have trusted my identification of the vegetal note and considered Sauvignon Blanc a little longer than I did. The textural element is coming from contact with lees and threw off my perception of the acid. I’ll have to get better at understanding that. This wine is Benjamin Dagueneau’s VdF made with younger vines from the St. Andelain hill in Pouilly-Fumé. Drink now or over the next handful of years, easy.

Visit to Vasse Felix; Very impressive lineup, we only tasted through the Premium range, however everything from the Sauvignon Blanc to the Chardonnay to the Cabernet, even the sparkling wines were well made, true to their style and the region.

Their premium Sauvignon Blanc at $35 was a bit of a surprise, floral, grapefruit, passion fruit on the nose yet with wonderful layers of orchard fruit, mineral notes, nutty, a slightly creamy mid-palate but never heavy, bright acidity leading to a long layered finish.
