Park Grill Chicago, dinner with some SA winemakers, note by Ken Forrester:

Deep mahogany, with wonderful polish and clarity, black fruit on the nose, berries and chocolate with cedar and cigar. Rich full mouth feel, showing beautiful fruit, cassis and cherry with Great elegance and balance, long full roused finish continued to open in the glass, and show amazing fruit and richness, after about 10 mins the palate opened up and the tannins started to show as the wine evolved. A "superior" wine without any doubt and in such remarkably good condition, 40 years later and such balance, richness perfectly preserved by the short little cork, which was totally saturated. Well done to the winemaker, Would that have been the father of Walter and Peter Finlayson?

Park Grill Chicago, Dinner With Some Sa Wine Makers, Note By Ken Forrester: Oude Libertas 1971 Selected Cabernet WSB 11104712 - 32471410

Colour a deep russet, with orange edges, baked nose with hints of coffee and dusty almost mushroom earthy notes.
Great fruit on the front of palate, soft, ripe, slightly leathery and high sweet notes, unmistakably Cabernet dominated, with classic Bordeaux cedar, lead pencil qualities, great finish and remarkable grip, opened up in the glass after about 10 mins. Truly remarkable wine in immaculate condition and a rare pleasure, will we see another 71 in this good shape?I doubt it....

Chateau Constantia circa 1965/70? Bertrams Devon Valley Estate Stellenbosch ( no certification ) Dinner at Park Grill, with SA winemakers, note by Ken Forrester: "Ullage high shoulder, cork short 35 mm and saturated to within 5 mm of the top.
The wine was light russet, very clear, some tartrates on the cork.
Nose was subdued, with some baked earth characters and hints of stewed fruit and coffee
Initially slightly "Burgundian" on the palate with red fruit flavors and a fine balance, followed by baked plum pudding and a dry finish, in remarkably good shape. Certainly one of the finest quality old SA wines I have ever seen. "

Good color, most at the tasting thought old Bordeaux, 70's. 82, 85, 86 ? the color was that good! The nose overwhelming leather and screaming left bank. Drinking this wine was very easy to do, wow an experience. Served blind with an 82 and 87. Thank you Manfred!

A very light, pale yellow with tinge of green color; herbaceous/grassy , fruit (gooseberry? grapefruit) nose; fruit gives way to acid and nice after taste; a very good South African SB, will be interesting to follow bottle maturation, if I can wait....
