My first trip to Walla Walla; 5/12/2022-5/14/2022 (Walla Walla, Washington): A very dark Pinot Gris with some acknowledged smoke taint. It is interesting as an oddity for now, but I would not want this in my cellar.

Quick barrel tasting note - darker blue and black fruits, pretty and focused with fruit, mineral, leather and tobacco on the palate.

this wine tasted cooked. I think it may have had poor provenance. we got it at a charity auction...I would love to try a bottle of this with good provenance...

Clear ruby in the glass that is closer to a Pinot than a Cab.

Nose is dark and earthy. Smoke and embers. Dark and enticing.

Palate is dark and still youthful. I can see this needing another 5 years to get silky. There's still some prominent tannic bite that shows up front. The mid-palate is nice and smooth though and it leads to a nice, long, smooth, dark finish. I want another sip.

It paired well with beef. Food really played well with this wine.

Would buy again.

Popped and poured, no food pairing. Very savory syrah, with black olive, pepper and smoke. Black fruit in there as well. For $15 this is a serious QPR. Drink now - 2024.

Never shipped due to cork taint
  • Adonisd1956 commented:

12/12/17, 10:47 PM - Earlier this year, in preparation for the May bottling of many of our 2015 wines, we purchased the highest quality corks from our long time supplier. Despite taking every possible step to ensure that we are crafting the best wines possible, during bottling we discovered paraffin particulates caused by faulty corks. This is from the letter I received from Cayuse regarding the Cork issue.

Sorry Gary. There is just not much there. Nothing remarkable about this wine.

pnp. right out of the bottle, this was fabulously red- and black-fruited. very napa-like, but with a nice structured backbone of tannin and acid to keep this from flabbing out. i got lots of blackberry black cherry aromas and flavors, with some earthy/savory complexities added in. a decent finish that took just a little while to match the depth of fruit on the nose. what's interesting is how often i find that with washington wines dominated by bordeaux varietals; the nose tends to be very promising, but the palate and finish don't quite deliver what the nose suggests. if scoring, 89-91. plenty of life in it, but not sure it's getting any better, so best to drink up.

6/2/13, 8:27 PM - I agree with your assessment of the nose, vs the palate on this wine. Promising nose, just ok on the palate!

Held on to it a bit too long. Needed to open up a bit.
A classic Bordeaux with earthy mineral nose.
Lacking in quality and finish of a great Bordeaux.
It did open up a bit.

5/12/13, 11:54 PM - If this is from the Langedoc and is Grenache and Syrah, it would not be a Bordeaux! I'm assuming you wrote this review for another wine???!!!!

I bought this at my local wine store because the wine maker has the same first name as my son! How cute is that? It was delish and had bright fruit and a nice long finish.
