2012 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Red Rhone Blend

Two points higher than my 2017 rating. Still a little disappointed because there is little Chateauneuf distinction vs. Clos des Papes or Pegau. Would've rated it another two points higher if it did. It is delicious with beautiful fruit that is not over powering, and some secondary flavors starting to evolve. Seems like the Syrah component is stronger than usually found. Finish is long and strong. Its a very sexy wine but this bottle is not what I'd expect from CdP. Opened for two hours before starting to drink with a 2010 Vigna Paganelli, and a 2012 Keenan Reserve Cab. Thinking the fruit will start to recede as it continues to evolve and should go for another 5 years.

2/19/24, 2:35 AM - Beaucastel is one of the Chateauneufs with the least grenache proportion and high Mourvedre but I guess you're well aware of that. Still, I don't see the comparison with Clos des Papes and Pegau as they also include stems which Beaucastel doesn't. I think it's hard to find "the one" Chateauneuf as they can be so diverse from the soils, varieties, and also vinification (whole bunch or destemmed, soft or strong extraction, aging in barriques, foudres or concrete tanks).

2/20/24, 4:18 AM - hi Bordeauxboy, alright now I understand what you meant. Indeed the Beaucastel is a special kind of C9P and personally, I prefer the more classic cuvées like Pégau or Charvin but for sure the diversity of this great appellation contributes to its prestige. Would love to visit the Californian vineyards as well, I have once been to Napa but I guess there is much more to see. And when you're in the Alps for the next time, don't miss out on the Valais, it's phenomenal! Best regards

2/21/24, 12:45 AM - Yes, definitely (especially comparing to Californian prices) but I'm not sure which ones have importers for the US:
    Domaine Gerald Besse, Martigny
    Domaine Benoit Dorsaz, Fully,
    Domaine La Rodeline, Fully
    Domaine Cornulus, Savièse
    Denis Mercier, Sierre
    Histoire d'Enfer, Corin (more pricy)

As for the Paien (also called Heida in Upper Valais), it is the same grape variety as Savagnin blanc (from Jura) and it's often with higher acidity but also good body. Other local specialties are Petite Arvine, Amigne, and Humagne Blanche, and for whites with less acidity Fendant (called Chasselas in the rest of the world) and (H)Ermitage (equivalent to the Northern Rhone white blends of either pure Marsanne or blended with Roussanne).

Mid garnet, a touch of brick orange to the rim. Evolved and slightly porty nose. Fruit quite stewed. Similar to previous bottle, but where that held things together in a relatively inoffensive way, this one is harder work. Can just about drink a glass, so merits 1*, but little interest beyond the academic in coming back for more. The alcohol is obvious 14.5% and the residual fruit is tired and stewed. I wonder if this would have been better in its youth to provide a buttress to the alcohol or whether the fruit always had this tired profile. Oh well… *

The 2016 Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Auslese*** White capsule is still a bit moody, and shows a lot weaker than the 2015'er served next to it. This is quite imprecise and almost unpleasant immediately upon opening, but regains poise within an hour. Dark honey, prunes, raisin, tawny orange marmalade, beeswax and mango/passion fruit at first, with more peach, nectarine and lemon/lime joining in with air. Very long and well balanced. 26+

9/15/23, 3:26 PM - This wine is made to hold many decades. Of course it should also bring pleasure young but I don‘t think it‘s the best approach to drink it after a few years and upon opening.

This is a very good Bourgogne Blanc. The nose displays citrus (more toward lemon) together with a splash of pear and a good amount of white fruit. A lovely little hint of vanilla as well.

The palate shows very nice tension given its level and I feel that it stylistically it has a certain austerity that reminds me a bit more of St. Aubin. I think Jasper Morris described it quite well as “classic Jobardian austere tension”. Would be interesting to know more specifically the amount of fruit from the different areas. This is vibrant for a Bourgogne and shows good length as well at this level. Recommended.

4/3/23, 6:38 AM - Having been part of the 2019 harvest I can tell you that the fruit for that cuvée came mostly from the Bourgogne appellation on the Meursault municipality ground mainly "Sous la Velle", "En l'Ormeau" and East of "Durots" with some younger vines from "Meix Garnier" in Monthélie (which I think they want to vinify separately in some years.

Nice expression of Sangiovese acidity: light to medium body, cherry, tobacco leaf, prune, leather, raspberry, soft plum, cranberry, nice acidic finish.

Still a good wine, but unfortunately showing the problems of this extremely hot vintage 2018 for German Riesling in a nutshell: Either too high in alcohol, or too high in residual sugar, or - if both of these problems could be avoided (as in this case) - lacking in extract, complexity and intensity. This Keller 2018 vdF shows very little extract, almost seems a bit hollow on the midpalate - and the finish is dominated by acidity, instead of the balanced interplay of acidity with minerality and herbal spiciness, as we know and love this wine from other vintages.
I don´t like such general conclusions, but 2018 Rieslings seems to have just very few exceptions to me... I think this wine will be one or two points better in a few years, but its potential will still be limited by this extremely difficult vintage.

5/8/22, 3:37 AM - I can understand your opinion and I‘m sure many winegrowers would agree, e.g. Had a discussion with Florian Lauer about the handling the 2018 grapes and he said that it was difficult to maintain the acidity also through very light pressing not to extract too much potassium or in any case avoid extensive skin contact, which might explain the low extract. If I‘m not mistaken fermentations also went rather quick.

2015 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée Red Rhone Blend
There is something seriously off, here. Two bottles, back-to-back are exactly the same...and taste like a Brunello with Brett. This isn't corked, rather something else. Dare I say, could this be a fraud? I won't slander the good stuff with a score that reflects my experience.
  • afot commented:

4/22/22, 5:36 AM - I drank this wine maybe two years ago and had a similar impression (bought through pinard de picard in Germany) but thought it might've been the early stage combined with a lack of aeration...

Wonderfully fresh, young, hedonistic with layers of brambly / garrigue / herbs de Provence and inky fruit. Some oak for sure, but in a sleek seductive way. Yum.

7/23/21, 6:19 AM - Domaine Charvi doesn’t own ine single wooden barrel. All their wines are fermented and aged either in steel or in concrete, so the wood taste might be something else.

Riesling tasting vs FXPichler Kellerberg 2017 and Schäfer-Fröhlich Felseneck 2016. Nb 1 for me tonight, clearly less wood than FXP, less alcohol and therefore "cleaner" Riesling aroma. Excellent!
  • afot commented:

5/21/21, 3:14 AM - Very nice tasting you did there but I don't see how you would compare a Nahe with a Wachau (Smaragd) wine. The focus is rather different and the intented style as well so it might just be obvious that the FX has a bolder character with e. g. more alcohol, less acidity and some bortrytis which Dönnhoff and SF definitely want to avoid.

Another horrible, undrinkable Italian red wine. Terrible QPR at any price. Off to the Vin Bin. Never will buy this producer again.

Immaculate cork with virtually no seepage. Ruby colored with virtually no bricking at the edge. High expectations. Clean nose but reticent bouquet with just a hint of underbrush. Fairly muted flavor profile with no jamminess typical of the vintage. Good body but somewhat short and tart. Lacking the sweet Grenache fruit that I expected. Pretty disappointing given that appeared to be in perfect condition. Certainly not cooked or corked. Just past it’s prime with faded fruit. My only bottle so no comparison to others.

Popped and poured. Pale red....this is actually a syrah, pinot noir and humagne rouge blend (not a syrah only wine) and it looks and tastes more towards the pinot end of things. Burnt rubber and raspberry nose with garrigue and a touch of oak. Light on the palate, somewhat medicinal final after a mid-palate showing some alcoholish pinot notes.

A bit of a strange beast....there is good acid and freshness here but it is sitting on a fairly alcoholic base and I am not convinced the blend works. Still....this had enough freshness and interest to bring pleasure to a mid-week pasta arrabiata.
  • afot commented:

6/20/19, 11:27 PM - This is actually a cabernet franc and Merlot blend.
