Similar to my 2023 notes. After double decant and sampling a glass we decided to save 3/4 for next day. It was superlative with similar taste profile.

Rest in peace, Stuart.

4/25/24, 2:22 PM - My next will be popped at 8am, decant starting at noon, tasting every couple hours and then rebottling for dinner. Much easier when your're retired! The key is to get it the flavors to break free - out of the monolithic wall.

5 hour slo-ox served over 2 days. Expressive intense blackberry, coffee, coal, glycerin. Sweet fruit balanced with dusty tannins and a fresh acidity. Honestly didn't see any excess influence of alcohol and wouldn't know this was a grenache had I not read the label. Yum!
  • Elkcims commented:

1/31/24, 8:45 AM - 2nd day was better integrated, more balanced, more intoxicating pleasure. I’ve found all SQN to be better on Day 2 with minor exception.

Drank over 2 days with 2 hours slo-ox to start. Enjoyable, big & bold classic QC cab; expected more. Black raspberry, black currants, plum, burnt toast. RP 100 maybe for Washington, but doesn't come close to the best out of Napa. 94+

1/9/24, 8:11 PM - Top 5 depend on many factors including vintage, pricing. I'd say I buy and enjoy wines regularly from 15-20 vintners. My favs right now are Bevan, Abreu, Maybach, Vice Versa, Abreu, Myriad, Tor, Carter, Memento Mori, Realm, Vine Hill Ranch, Pride, Outpost, Rivers Marie, Switchback Ridge, Greer, and Schrader. I'm also big fan of Sine Qua Non and Fingers Crossed Syrah and Grenache down the coast. Note that a lot of the above make wines from Beckstoffer grapes (Crane especially)...Beckstoffer vineyards excite my senses and satifsy like few others.

2 hour slo-ox and drank over 2 days. Full bodied, rich dark blackberry fruit interlaced with kirsch, spice, and cassis. A superb example of purity of fruit providing unrestrained gratification.
  • Elkcims commented:

12/17/23, 2:19 PM - I sensed hints of smoky clove, spices and it showed with a creamy like texture. I think all can be attributed to new oak barrels.

Decanted 1/2 btl 3 hours and had 1 glass. It was the first MM CS I've tried so I wasn't sure what to expect besides others reviews. What I got was a bit of iron and campfire aroma without discernible fruit absent detectable tannins. It was unlively. Rebottled and tried another glass the next day: Same earthy iron campfire on the palate, but with a hint of black raspberry and a bit softer. Decided to leave the balance (375) in an open bottle overnight and had a glass each of the following two days. Again, not much fruit but interesting: turned earth, mushroom, black raspberry, medium to full bodied. Given the vintage with the fires and smoke throughout the area it made me question whether this will improve with more discernible fruit or if this is the style. I hope that this improves over time. I plan to call MM to get some additional information on how best to serve this and what to expect.
  • Elkcims commented:

10/10/23, 10:28 AM - Consulted Hayes at MM: fires started 10 days after grapes harvested. Absence of fruit likely due to being corked. Will try another bottle in a few days.

Seabrook Beach Trip 2023; 7/8/2023-7/15/2023 (Seabrook Island, SC): Solid, touch earthy for me when I had it on night two. Heartburn issues so only sampled lightly
  • Elkcims commented:

10/2/23, 3:15 PM - Good to know. Is the 07 still bright? I just decanted a 13 last night and it was too high alcohol for 3.5 hours with nice acidity but little to no discernable fruit until 3 1/2 hours...then it was singing cherry pie. I'm enjoying the remaining half tonight.

Have you received any Pinot or Chard offers from them since the 13 Pinot offer in 2022, the 13 Chard offer in 2021? And the '12 Pinot was offered in 2018. I love that they cellar the wine for us. Yet I see CT reviews for the 2014 pinot and I see the 2016 Pinot FS in Palm Desert CA. I just postd this on Bezerker. Thanks.

Took this on our annual Labor Day camping trip with 50 families. Our little cohort of 20+ decided this year to roast a pig. I secured a 20lb pig in Grantsville, Utah, and we lovingly prepared amazing oak into the perfect temperature of coals and roasted it for 4+ hours. If you have not had a whole pig roasted over a fire, you're missing out. Anyway, what goes with Pig? Pinot. And which Pinot has a pig on the label? This wine. It was a great match. My friend who grew up in the Philippines taught us about all of the deliciousness that can be found in the pig's head, and let's just say, the head is the best part. A great match. Pig & Pinot!!
  • Elkcims commented:

10/1/23, 4:25 PM - Nice review of luau pig. That’s a first on CT. We occasionally enjoy 300 lb luau pig here on Kauai prepared for visitors. Never eaten the head though! We like a big Napa Oakville cab with grippy tannins when serving fatty pig.

Splash decant, very good fruit forward with silky tannins. Saved half for Day 2 - it went south; had a metallic taste that took 90 minutes to dissipate. 94/93
  • Elkcims commented:

9/18/23, 8:36 AM - I’ve found 3 twins to be best with 60-90 minutes of air prior to pouring. Each vintage is different and this bottle was my first 2019 IIRC. Other vintages past were layed down longer and reflected more secondary flavors.

  • Elkcims commented:

9/20/23, 7:30 AM - Your welcome. It’s an Albatross chick on my home golf course -Princeville, Kauai. Both parents take turns sitting on the egg and then watching over their baby for about 4-5 months before they fly off. They return to the same spot, within 10 yards, every year repeating the birth. We see about 20-30 if these annually. As adults they have a 6-7 foot wingspan. I’ve almost been clocked in the head by one flying too close several times while putting.

Nothing special. not worth the $80 tariff retail from Vinopolis.

Edit Oct 7: Subtle nose, tart, sour red fruits, subtle barnyard, earth, light bodied. Maybe this gets better with time in cellar, but for me...easy pass... at least at this time.

10/8/22, 1:29 PM - Given the Erin Brooks WA 98 rating I’d say you have a point about a long decant. One hour slow ox didn’t do anything significant. Will wait a year and open the next one 6 hours prior and taste along the way.

3 hour slow ox. Moderate tannins, blue/black fruits. Drank half next day and improved a couple points. The palate is dense without being overpowering. Smooth, fully integrated tannins, and a 30 second finish.
  • Elkcims commented:

8/22/22, 5:26 PM - I typically open the bottle and stand it upright at 60 for several hours. I use a Vinglace bottle cooler for this most the time. Some will say removing the cork only oxygenates the wine at the top, yet it works wonders for me because I typically drink half the first night and by the time the second glass is poured it has been at least an hour with the bottle open. Then I pour the balance - exactly 375ml in a split bottle and recork and place in the frig. I pull that bottle from the frig 1-2 hours prior for the next day's meal and repeat - one glass with dinner and one about 60 minutes following dinner. I began doing this years ago when my wife stopped drinking bc of headaches. She now takes "sips" of my glass. Hope this helps!

Believe this is at peak right now. Gave it about an hour of air with the last 30 minutes in the fridg to chill it slightly. Boy, this is good. No surprise as Greer is pretty consistent (looking forward to the Roy Piper Cabs that start including Greer in 2021).
Starting to show its' age in the color but still very vibrant. Creamy (not syrupy) with piercing dark fruit flavors - blackberry, plum.
After many days on the Winekeeper that last glass included very fine tannins which seemed to result in a burnt toast finish. Not a negative, just very intriguing.
Should last for a few more years, but if I had more I'd drink them sooner than later.

3 hour slow ox at cellar temp; If French and Napa had a red wine baby, this would be it: damp earth funk, liquid rock, dried flowers, sweet fruit. Full bodied yet elegant.
  • Elkcims commented:

1/21/22, 5:43 PM - Yeah, you're right. I was thinking about the barnyard intersection that I associate with French bordeaux and the sweet fruit so apparent of mist Napa reds.

Nose: [55°-63°] Fresh dark fruits with a pleasant brightness, vibrant purple flowers, clean dusty and earthy forest floor, a fine dark line of graphite in the background and clean fresh oak. The dark fruits deepen more and become macerated with time in the glass and introduces a subtle dusting of earthy cocoa.

Palate: [55°-63°] Refreshing minerality that pierces the dark fruit. However, the dark fruit eventually envelops the bright minerals but it still manages to shine powerful enough to make the dark fruit glow. Rich dark earth with similar notes of flowers from the nose, almost creamy black fruits, disintegrated clean pencil with a clean finish of minerals. Similar new oak from the nose along with a refined spice.

Attributes: Clear dark medium ruby. Dry with medium to medium-plus amounts of fine, grainy yet already supple tannin. Medium to medium-plus body with medium to medium-plus acidity (great integration already). Good finish of at least 20-22 seconds.

Thoughts: I love the amazing nuance in the flavor profile here; rich and flavorful but stayed refreshing and does not fatigue the palate at all, great finesse. The idea of blending three renowned sites worried me a bit, something similar to "too many cooks in the kitchen", but this worked out like an all-star team. Each site played their role so well together: earth, minerals and fruit. Something to also note: this drank so well straight outta the bottle and kept its vitality through 8 hours. Magical elixir level stuff. GLHF trying to not touch this for a few years.. should be shooting fireworks in 4-5 years. 98-99

Serving notes: Bordeaux glass. Emptied bottle into a decanter at cellar temp ~54° for 0 hours before serving, continued to decant while consumed over another 8.5 hours (total 8.5 hrs). Recommend serving ~58°-64°. Taste along before/while decanting, this held strong throughout the entire tasting with not much change.

Strong in tannin and has the strength to carry a distance. Sultana, plum, dark cherry, with subtle hints of vanilla. I’m not too sure about all these 95+ wines. I would assume they haven’t tried Bordeaux Rothschild and latour... because I wouldn’t trade one of them for 20 of these.
  • Elkcims commented:

3/18/21, 9:12 PM - You've posted only 17 times and only 1 CA Napa cab among these. I disagree about the equivalence of a rating for a Bordeaux First Growth like Mouton vs a CA First Growth (according to Parker). Right or wrong, I tend to compare wines to each other based on locale, appellation, and even classification. Hence one can have a 95pt Napa Spottswoode Cab that is nowhere near to or equal to a 95pt Mouton. If I were drinking them at the same time then I would rate them vs each other on that occasion. We do our own thing here and the scores largely reflect that. My 95 might be your 90. To each his own. Cheers mate!

Very disappointing. Bought on release and impeccably stored. A total mess: plum fruit bomb, disjointed, and without much value to the meal. Thick and syrupy. First day: 60 minute in glass decant - 92 points. Second day after stored with wine preserve: undrinkable.
  • Elkcims commented:

Slow Ox 3 hours. Full bodied, Deep dark fruits, dark chocolate, earth, meaty flavor. Very intriguing and unlike most. I liked the 09 a touch better, but this was a real treat.
  • Elkcims commented:

2/10/21, 4:45 PM - Tannins well integrated and non-primary. Acidity very balanced although it was just a bit sweeter than the 09. The 09 was fresher - more vibrant, but both were delicious and have at least a couple more years at the same level assuming ideal storage.

  • Elkcims commented:

10/11/18, 1:40 PM - I drink close to 200 bottles of Cali cabs and Reds annually. The 07 Beringer ranks in the top 30 of bottles I have had this year. Tannins hardly noticeable, and the smell on nose, multi level taste mid-palate and finish were remarkable especially given the price point of this bottle. I can't see how this will get any better. I'd pick a nice occasion with the right meal and enjoy.
