A trip to South Africa's Coastal Region with Reni, Rainer and Bert. Day 9, Klein River Valley and Stellenbosch. Tasted at the winery, with owner Piet Dreyer and his second son and winemaker Josef.

Bordeaux blend of 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, 6% Malbec and 5% Petit Verdot. Medium ruby colour. Slightly muted nose. Red fruit, some dark fruit, vegetal and herbaceous notes, spices and some vanilla, with fresh but disharmonious acidity, dry and slightly chewy tannin, and average length. Slightly better concentration than the prior wines. Elegant style. Will need some time.

Surprised to see the high scores on this wine given its lack of flavor intensity. Beautiful riesling nose showing tart apple and a hint of petrol. Mouthfeel is solid, continuing the ripe apple theme with a smooth finish. Problem is the lack of intensity, especially at the finish. I believe the scores are generous because of the popular style combined with the lack of familiarity with the varietal. This is a nice, solid wine but there's better out there from France, Germany AND the Finger Lakes.
