October 1, 2016 - A single vineyard Blaufränkisch not produced anymore. Alc. 13%.

Translucent, a bit pale black cherry color. Very matured and even a bit old nose with quite a lot of that aged dried dark fruit character and aromas of raisin, dried prunes, sous-bois, some cocoa spice, a little herbal greenness and a hint of nuttiness. Juicy, succulent and quite full-bodied palate with developed flavors of ripe dark cherry, some bitter and tart dark berries, a little sour raisin fruit, hints of dried dates and some general wizened fruit flavors. Velvety mouthfeel, balanced acidity and moderately grippy tannins. Quite long and developed finish with aged flavors of wizened dark fruit, sweet raisin, roasted spices, some black pepper, a little nuttiness and a hint of caramel. Tannins give a slight bite to the aftertaste.

A classy and elegant Blaufränkisch that has seen some better days, but shows how the variety behaves after being aged extensively. Either this bottle has been cellared for some time in not-so-optimal circumstances, or this wine just doesn't age for that long. Obviously has reached its peak some years ago and started its decline probably a year ago. Though the great majority of the wine's aroma and taste profile is about the aged tertiary characteristics, it is still drinking very nicely and it also has very nice structure. Drink up soon.

July 8, 2013 - Very high acidity, red berries, some vanilla and smoke flavors, short and crisp, not very well balanced. - 87 points

March 13, 2013 - Another bottle from the "thin and sour" department. Apparently some huge bottle variation here. No resemblance to the great bottles I had a year ago - actually tastes like two very different wines. Very strange. - 86 points

December 14, 2012 - Based on my earlier reviews I bought a few more bottles of this wine but the first new bottle I opened was not nearly as good. Not bad, just nothing special. Pretty thin with juicy red fruits, high acidity, no smoke, no perceivable tannins, quite sour and rather short. Maybe this was a flawed bottle (no cork problem as far as I can tell), or a different filling, or not stored properly before I acquired it. Hope the remaining bottles show better. - 86 points
