January 26, 2009 - Did a pop and pour with a large format. I got some nice fruit in the way of strawberries, plums, with
some notes of earth, mushrooms, and brown spices. This doesn't smell like many of the cali pinots
i've had in the past. It brings a nice silky mouthfeel that is very balanced and rooted in dirt.
Lots of nice spices, earth, and red fruits with a medium finish that was very burgundian. A real
eye opener. -

July 15, 2008 - George Hendry’s ranch sits at the foot of Mount Veeder in southern Napa. I know Hendry as one of my favorite artisan Zinfandel/Primitivo producers, but he also grows and bottles some others (including a Cab, Chards, and a Pinot Noir) that are pretty darn good. From my notes during a visit, the Pinot Noir Blocks 4 and 5 are located along Redwood Creek, west of the town of Napa. The St. George roots were grafted with the Dijon 115 clone, a Joseph Swan field selection, and UCD Clone 12. The vines were planted between 1993 and 1995. Average production is approximately 2 tons per acre. I recall George Hendry saying the Pinot blocks get a lot of water; and that this might be the most problematic varietal he grows at his ranch.
Pop and poured; this 2001 has a bricking purple color. Aromas of dusty berry, dark spices, and herbs emanate from the glass. Different things happen on the palate as the wine fills in: briery plums, the slightest bit of mocha, dark mushroom, and earth are apparent. I get secondary flavors of dried flowers and white pepper on the finish. Medium to full bodied tannic frame, with nice acidity. Enough structure exists to think this wine could withstand additional cellaring, but I’m not convinced there is enough fruit to follow along. However, I am sure am enjoying it right now. 14.1% alcohol. -
