  • Montesquieu Does not like this wine:

May 2, 2024 - This was either a bad bottle or long past its prime. Since so many other recent ratings extol this wine, I'll withhold a derogatory score. The bottle I drank was simple, thin, and short. 85? Flavors lacked balance and elegance. My friend couldn't know the provenance of his bottle, and perhaps bad storage would explain our experience. If this was a representative bottle, then my preferences don't resemble others'.

February 24, 2024 - Bordeaux 2004 - 20 Years On - 33 Reds: All wines tasted blind, not decanted. Observations: 1) 2004 is a mediocre vintage overall, with many pleasant wines, but without the depth of better years. 2) At the top, the vintage produced some classic, old-school wines with lots of freshness and fresh fruit. 3) At the lower end, many wines lacked fruit and ripe tannins, resulting in some astringent and slightly drying wines. 4) An alarming number of Right Bank wines (5 out of 16, no Left Bank wine) were oxidized, including some heavyweights like Petrus, Evangile or Figeac. An unacceptably high proportion of faulty wines. 5) I’m not sure that the 2004 are currently in a good phase, many of my scores were lower than in previous tastings. The question is if it’s just a weaker phase or the beginning of the end. 6) At the top and the only wine >95pts was a layered Le Pin (rated 96pts), with a charming Vieux Chateau Certan, a surprising Issan and Clos l'Eglise, as well as an elegant Lafite sharing second place (all rated 94pts).

TN: Another winner from Pomerol. This showed layered with red and riper dark fruit and just hints of blueberries, complemented by minerality, herbs, some brett notes. Fine, elegant structure and good balance. This was one of the most complete wines in the tasting.

January 6, 2024 - $100+ vs 3.0: See MN Wine Junkie for treatment, it was his bottle. Violets, heather, fine tannins, a classy and classic Pomerol.

January 6, 2024 - $100+ Tasting (Liz's House): Splash double decant (to get rid of sediment) plus 4 hours of slo-O.

I wanted to open this wine because I had a 2004 Lafleur a couple weeks ago and it was singing! So I thought I should retry this again! Glad I did!

This wine is in the zone right now, at least for my palate, with fruit and tertiary flavors in perfect harmony! Nose shows lots of violets, cherry, anise with earth and leather. Palate shows nicely balanced flavors of earth, cherry, cocoa powder, violets and sweet tobacco. In a great place right now!

94-95 and delicious! I think this just needs a double decant for sediment if you have time to follow this wine....if smaller pours, then it should also be slo-O'd for at least an hour.

January 6, 2024 - Liz's Annual $100 Plus Tasting (Minneapolis, MN): Ok the 91 average is kind of embarrassing. This is amazing stuff. Most velvet of all the wines tonight. Violets, anise, blueberries, cherry, spice and blue currants. Medium to long finish. In the drinking window but has some life lets. Thanks to Jason for bringing.
