May 1, 2024 - Drank over a month. A sweet praline pecan nuttiness is contrasted with a fresh boal acidity. With more air, candied orange rind, dried fig, sultanas add more complexity to the richness. The acidity holds strong and keeps the palate in balance.

Acidic lift from the grape and a pinch of salinity on the finish make this decant glass very drinkable even as a standalone dessert. Very nice for the price.

February 4, 2024 - …a month later, some things have not changed, but there is a seamlessness and more depth to the flavours in the palate, and the saline vein is more pronounced, more seaweed-like:

"dark, tawny amber with good legs in the glass …briny notes on the nose that with time diminished and gave way to fig, macerated apricot and baked orange with accents of nut and honey. mouth-coating flavours with a surprising saline vein that runs the length and provides a lovely counterpoint: dates, nuts, syrup and caramelised citrics parade. with time spice clove and mocha notes emerge. a seville orange pithiness drives thru the moderately long persistence."

    January 1, 2024 - two-hour plus aeration, which helped quite a lot.

dark, tawny amber with good legs in the glass. initially strong briny notes on the nose that with time diminished and gave way to fig, macerated apricot and baked orange with accents of nut and honey. mouth-coating flavours with a surprising saline vein that runs the length and provides a lovely counterpoint: dates, nuts, syrup and caramelised citrics parade. with time spice clove and mocha notes emerge. a seville orange pithiness drives thru the moderately long persistence.

while not brightly acidic, the saline and pithy minerality are a great balance for the sweetness. upside potential with a bit more oxygenation as more layers are revealed.

19% AbV; ~80-90g/L RS; 100% Malvasia Fina; aged in the "Canteiro" system; bottled in 1998 with bar-top cork under brittle wax seal

August 11, 2023 - Open now for two weeks which it really needed. I had tasted this side by side with a d’Oliveiras 1968 Bual and I liked the 1968 better but it wasn’t completely fair as the 1968 had been open a week longer. This has a good toffee butter, walnut and wood core. Medium sweetness as expected but not too much. Acids are present for sure but not overwhelming at all. Right now a pretty and pleasant mid weight but I expect it will evolve now as it opens.

June 29, 2023 - This improved substantially after being open for a little over a week. This has brown sugar, malt, and a nutty note. Acid is there, but not overpowering. This bottle showed an improved finish. Not close to the concentration or complexity you are going to get with something with much more time in cask, but still a very good effort. Awesome pairing with nuts. After several more weeks, this just continued to improve.
