January 23, 2014 - This is the one and only time I had this wine, but based on this bottle I think that the tasting notes here are undervaluing the wine. Yes, it's a lighter vintage and there are many unsuccessful wines. This one was not thin, however, nor was it lacking in any way in depth or resonance of flavor, it was not short or clipped in any way, and it showed wonderful complexity. It is more rosy in color than the darker wines that Verset made in better vintages. It does not have the richness or power that those wines have. But to say that it is less good because of this would be like saying that Poulsard is not good because it is light in color and not a rich wine. This is an opportunity to see what Verset did in a light vintage, and he totally rocked it, in my opinion. The wine is perfumed and pungent and complex and terroir expressive and entirely deliciously satisfying. Top top class, I think. He did way better here, for example, than I thought he did in 2003.

January 19, 2014 - The nose makes the wine all worthy here. Really nice with smoky notes with a touch of green (stem, pepper). Some soft dark fruit (like blackberry/blueberry which could have been riper) with violet and earthy. The palate is a little disappointing, lacking in the mid-palate and a little thin.
Still, a unique experience to drink Verset. -

May 18, 2013 - Drinks at Grand Sichuan (St. Marks Place Grand Sich, NY): Producer over vintage, producer over vintage... this is lighter and thinner than Verset usually tends to be, but this is still quite compelling with that classic Verset fragrance combining vivid bloody, leathery and meaty elements with green olives and red fruits. While it does show some green elements on the palate and feels a bit thin on the back end, the aromatics here are absolutely compelling and it's a pleasure to drink.

May 17, 2013 - Stunning nose - deep, dark and still. Violets, sweet dark fruit, meaty, smoked meat and smoke. Quite tart and a little odd on the mouth - quite sour with sour cherry. Maybe a little hallow. Elegant but weird. If the palate was like the nose, this would have been easily in the 18/20 range. Still nice - led to a discussion about how we would rather have a great noses than a great palates if we had to choose. Nose - 6/6, Palate - 4/6, Finish - 4/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 15/20.

April 3, 2013 - Touch of orange marmelade in the nose. Lighter body than the usual Verset, and MUCH SWEETER. Sign of chapetalization?? Washed out vintage. Less volume than others in tasting, and shorter in finish.
