February 25, 2023 - Sweet plum, dates, tobacco and cedar on the nose and palate. Good acidity for its age with medium plus length. Decent but no fireworks.

May 12, 2022 - Pre 1990 Cali Cab + 1981 Birthday Surprise! (Cowford Chophouse): Perhaps not totally fair but I just had very high expectations for this wine and I would say this was good, but it didn't quite get to the great that I was looking for. It's a nice wine. Just a bit simple in style. Drinks well, but missing the extra layers.

December 31, 2017 - Deep, dark garnet in color with clearing at the edges. Full, forward, attractive nose of ripe fruit aromas of dark cherries, black plums & cassis with lovely cigar box overtones of cedar & tobacco, some floral notes, earthy/dusty, tar, leather, mushrooms, eucalyptus/mint, herbs, cocoa, some spices & minerals. Full bodied with a very good concentration of well balanced & smooth textured, ripe dark fruits of cherries, plums & cassis with earthiness, minty, cocoa, coffee, mushrooms, dried herbs, spices & minerals. Long lingering finish. Drinks quite well at present but has the structure and ripe fruit flavors to continue with its current plateau of maturity although at 40 years of age, any further development with additional aging is unlikely. It is amazing to see how this wine has developed over time from hard-as-nails tannic to silky smooth & polished. Cork was intact & clean with fill at bottom of neck.

February 25, 2017 - A 40th Birthday Celebration, Lunch Edition (Elements Restaurant at the Sanctuary - Paradise Valley, AZ): From magnum. Black cherry and plum with faint tobacco and savory dried herbs. This is big and dense, with a firm finish and a few sharp edges, but still very enjoyable. Others enjoyed this more than I did today.

February 25, 2017 - From magnum, strong menthol notes and some soap on the nose. Slight bricking, dry finish, this strikes me as a bit too rustic, but others are going gaga. The menthol notes got more intense with air.
