Community Tasting Notes 10

November 24, 2023 - Last bottle and would like more. I was looking for a fresh high acid light bodied red to drink with osso buco and this was the perfect match to cut through the rich meal. Good deep red berry fruit - raspberry and cherry - with some mild soil notes. Fine acids, no tannins and decent finish. Very good.

April 14, 2023 - Light body but still fruity. No sign of decay. Delicious food wine

September 14, 2019 - Interesting to find this; chalky, elegant, precise with a pretty, femine and enjoyable fruit and a good, vibrant acidity. Excellent food wine - very elegant, very Old World.

August 7, 2019 - Excellent wine. Nine years in, a perfect balance of red berry, earth and crisp lightweight body. Good acids that are counterpoint to richer food. Thoroughly enjoyable if you like a lighter style, which I do. Drink with food. Not rustic at all.

When I came across this bottle, I was wondering how serious could be this wine made by a prominent winemaker from this northern not so prestigious appellation.

My rule of thumb is to 1st choose the producer and then terroir so I gave it a chance. Moreover it’s quite a rarity!

Vincent Dauvissat is one of the most sought after producers in Chablis and is at the top of the Chablis hierarchy. The elevage is in old barrels with no fining. Gentle process of oxygenation adds an extra dimension of complexity to the flavour of his wines.

Irancy is a small appellation created in 1999 with about 160ha which lies 10km SE of Auxerre and has very beautiful vineyards. Above the village, a natural amphitheatre faces due south and captures all the sun that is available. The slopes are full of vines and cherry trees.

Irancy is light red and is clearly the best of those in the Auxerroies – it is the only one which is more than a sort of half rose. Interestingly, up to 10% of the local Cesar or Pinot Gris grapes are allowed here as well.

Vincent Dauvissat 2010 Irancy is pale ruby color with warm hue revealing its bottle age. Charming floral aromas with stewed red cherries and oak touch. Quite concentrated for what you would expect from Irancy. I enjoyed its elegant light body. Reminded me the style of the best examples of Coteaux Champenois such as those of Egly-Ouriet. Simply the best Irancy I have ever had!

Funny fact about Irancy. It is sometimes referred to as “the famous red Chablis” which is oxymoron as no other grapes but Chardonnay are allowed in Chablis. But the story goes that creative merchants introduced such term to better market the wines of this not so famous commune.
