    May 1, 2021 - First of 3 bottles.
Fill level into neck; cork in excellent condition.
I would recommend decanting this wine at least 4 hours prior to serving based on my experience with this bittle.
Quite closed at first, it gradually opened up to show a nice array of aromas: iron, mushroom, evolved plums and cherries all on a "rustic" side in the best possible meaning.
This must have been ferocious iearly on as there's still a solid tannin backbone. The tannins are excellent and this is what we should expect of Madiran. No wonder that micro-oxygenation was invented here!
Good acidity, nice tannins. This wine begs for food and would handle sturdy dishes. The oak is not perceptible; nor should it be. Excellent complexity. A wine with character.
I hope that the winemaking in Madiran never changes but doubt it very much...Drink over next 5 years or so.

November 2, 2016 - Madiran is an area where the wine can endure heat and also long ageing in the bottle.

This is illustrated by this 27 year old bottle which is fresh and vibrant although the tertiary notes have developed.

Immediate taste suggests this is a Bordeaux but the mid-palate and aftertaste is not really Bordeaux and directs rather to Rhone and the conclusion is that it is a Madiran.

Really nice wine and I have bought newer Montus vintages and wonder whether they will hold up the same way as this magnificent 1989.

October 26, 2016 - Blind. Smelled like Bordeaux, left bank from 2004 or 2006 (!) Incredibly well kept bottle and cork. Still lots of tannins, but they are mature and fine. Mouthfeel also like Bordeaux, but a tad more rustic. Impressive length for such a modest appellation.
