September 25, 2021 - From a magnum. The cork, after a twist was quite free. So there was barely anything holding the seal. Golden with barely a tinge of copper. Fresh nose of well integrated ripe apple, mineral and old oily machinery. Cut apple on the palate showing fresh tartness. Lacks a bit of acidity. It doesn't have that electricity you like from a German Riesling though still shows freshness. Maybe a tad rich for a Spatlese but that could be the acidity issue. There is some pure extract in here that really gives this a primary edge. So alive. The cork is the only issue I have with this living longer. Its in a great window anyway so go for it. I have some memory of '93 not being a great year for acidity in German Rieslings. It certainly seems to be the case for CA wines in a weird correlation. Quite enjoyable and holds up over three nights perfectly.

May 6, 2018 - Frigging amazing. From Magnum. Just a beautiful, mature, Spatlese. Too many wines to take detailed notes, but phenomenal tasty stuff.

December 31, 2016 - From magnum, this was rocking! Good acid, somewhat resolved sugars, deep and complex yellow fruit. Great bottle with friends on NYE.

March 31, 2016 - (from magnum) Wonderfully mature, light gold in color. The acid/sweet balance is on point.

May 24, 2015 - Delicious with Thai food--good acidity and a little more of that petroleum nose than I would have expected from a 22 year old.

(SPATLESE Schloss Sch?nborn Erb-Mac) Friday SPECIAL Dear Friends, This is more of a “Special Special” instead of just a Friday Special - as far as Riesling goes, this would be eye-opening anytime of the year. If you are into aged German wine, you may want to consider this very rare magnum that has never moved since bottling. We’ve profiled the incredible cellar of Schloss Schonborn ad finitum (and all of you have supported their older vintages with aplomb) - now comes the candy we’ve been waiting for - the magnums. If a 15-year-old magnum from one of Germany’s finest sites sounds interesting, it should - these are so hard to come by they haven’t sold very many since it was bottled in 1994 and this format and vintage were being held for a special 50 year and 100 year retrospective in 2043 and 2093. In magnum, this Spatlese has the chance to last that long and they knew it when it was bottled (by hand). From the very best fuders in 1993, the 750s of this wine are also excellent but the magnums are akin to a quasi-reserve of that wine (and the pedigree of the large format bottles is evident when you dust off the cob-web covered bottles and crack your first cork - unlabeled and in a dank and dark cellar but the room filling aromatic would be a highlight moment of anyone’s career). This wine has everything - it has fabulous extract, acidity, terroir and medium Spatlese sugar weight and the bottles (now labeled) are really something to look at. If you want a showpiece bottle in your cellar that (truth be told) is downright cheap for what it is, this is the only opportunity we have to secure this set. They are keeping some for the winery retrospective but your support of the other wines has yielded this incredible little treat - too late for Christmas but I’m not arguing. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED for clarity, quality and ability to last for decades (at a bargain price for a magnum with this level of provenance). ONE SMALL SHIPMENT ONLY with perfect provenance directly from the winery cellar: 1993 Schloss Schonborn Erbacher Macrobrunn Riesling Spatlese (Rheingau) 1.5lt (tough to make any comparisons, but the regular bottles are $40-50 so this is quite a steal) Please give us your maximum number of magnums and we will allocate accordingly Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Germ9850
