  December 30, 2012 - JM's Old World Education (Pine Close): This beautifully matured Bordeaux crowned a night of lovely surprises. A relatively cheap bottle, at 27 years of age, but drinking at absolutely peak - this would have been my wine of the night if not for the splendid 1987 Wynn's John Riddoch that followed it. I thought this was classic Graves on the nose, with smells of sweet tobacco, cassis and damp earth - nicely lush and attractive aromas. The palate really surprised me. Nicely rounded with age, it showed impeccable balance, with fresh acidity and soft, velvety tannins perfectly integrated into the wine's subtle dark-fruited notes, with earth, meat and sweet tobacco pulling away into a long, fresh finish, lifted with a touch of sour plums and a nice floral lilt. This was neither the deepest nor most complex of wines, but it had such a lovely Graves character and gave so much pleasure that I actually guessed it was a La Mission from a weaker vintage. A lovely wine quite at peak. Yum.

  December 30, 2012 - (jm's old world education@paulS') Nose evidently capsicums and toasted green peppers, stemmy, with minty dark tobacco florals. Taste coherently shows sweet tobacco, black cherries along with firm, fine tannins. Showing somewhat soft sweetness on the mouthfeel, this bottle expresses a lovely, integrated balance, ending on a long, sweet, expressive finish. Impressive!

  December 13, 2010 - Birthday wines; 12/10/2010-12/14/2010: Lots of funk and dirt and floweriness at the start that eventually was overtaken by tea leaves and green peppers. Very classically austere bordeaux. This at first was more st julien margaux than graves but there was an underlying minerality lying beneath.

  September 23, 2009 - Didn't know what to expect from this wine. Popped and poured and let it sat on the glass for about 10 minutes. Color of garnet. Some funkiness in the nose along with hint of some berries and earth. Elegant and balanced with soft tannins. Not much fruit left, but underbrush, river rock and spices. Medium finish. A well crafted $20 wine on release, it is past its prime but still drinking quite well after 24 years.
