Community Tasting Notes 4

  • Wazdakka Likes this wine:

July 13, 2013 - Still going strong. Decant for 30-35 min, and then get lots of berries and oak tastes, nice soft tannins, and a little acidity.

February 27, 2011 - From the Black Russian Vertical tasting at McGregor Vineyard (2011): 2002: Strange smell…chemicals. This must be decanted. The odd (and slightly unpleasant) aroma fades over time. The flavors are berries, and oak.

December 17, 2010 - None of the previous reservations that I had about this one - it is a great wine and ready to be drinking right now.

November 23, 2009 - The bouquet was very fruity at first, but took on slightly chemical overtones as it sat in the decanter for an hour - sort of the opposite effect that I expected. Also had the smell of a hint of dirt. The taste was of raspberries with an earthy aftertaste and slightly gritty mouth feel.

Some of the Black Russian makes a pretty good drink by itself, but this one is a dinner wine. It paired very well with the steak, but due to some of the strange attributes that I remarked on above, it was not entirely pleasant by itself.
