Community Tasting Notes 17

November 10, 2017 - Just a few weeks shy of its 90'th birthday, this bottle was incredible! The wine had intensity, concentrated and slightly tough or austere tannins, but the nose, with its floral, sweet, cherry pipe tobacco, incense, wet earth, cedar and herb scents knocked me out. Masculine, but regal, the wine didn't move much in the glass, it just softened a bit and allowed more of the sweet, red fruits to shine through the advanced patina of age.

May 13, 2017 - I have had the joy of tasting this before, in the mid-1990s, and out of respect for the colossal achievement of the Chateau I am going to score it based on that evening rather than this one. Both bottles were in great shape -- into neck in both cases. The ferocity of the earlier bottle was astounding for a wine that at that point was 65+ years old -- it came out juicy, full of fruit, unbelievably deep and youthful -- yes, youthful. This bottle, almost 90 years old, was still fabulous, big, massive, but the burnt earthy tones and mushrooms dominated the nose in a way that they didn't 2 decades ago. I would rate the wine now in somewhere 92-94 points. It's a very different experience now -- still unforgettable, but in a completely different way. Technically in decline, but a Ch Margaux in decline is still awe inspiring.

March 30, 2014 - Second bottle started a little better, but ended up simply being too old a with just dried fruit.
