February 25, 2022 - I opened this a few hours before drinking and gave it a quick double decant. Really, that was to just gauge what kind of air would be needed or if this was yet another oxidized/heat damaged Massolino (I’ve had some bad luck with older Massolino). Immediately, it was gorgeous and showing savory, dark red fruits of cranberries and dark red cherries. It really blossomed in the bottle to also reveal sour red fruits, roasted herbs, warm chestnuts, violets, crushed rocks, licorice, leather, and winter savory spices. This nose is well in that gorfeous zone of primary and tertiary melding together. The Full bodied feel is silky and refined with a light-heavyweight quality to it. The high acidity has some sting still while the high tannins are a smidge drying. The structure makes this feel like it is right at its peak or even very slowly at the top of its descent. There is really no reason to wait on this any longer and this bottle was very ready from the getgo.

February 22, 2022 - Decanted. Med (+) garnet with a tawny hue. Surprisingly intense color for an aged Barolo. Med (+) aromas of ripe black fruit, dried red fruit, dried roses, sweet tobacco, forest floor, and noticeable oak spice from 30 (+) mos. in large Slavonian oak casks. Developed and tertiary, but surprising in its intensity and vibrancy. Dry, with plenty of fruit left. Med (+) acidity, med (+), polished tannins and high but well integrated alcohol (14%). Full-bodied, intensely flavored but very well balanced, with a long finish of licorice, tobacco and botanical herbs. This traditional, long fermentation Barolo has several years left to go before declining.

December 24, 2020 - 2020 Christmas Eve Wines (Elgin): Mahogany core to a tawny brown rim. Lifted bouquet of earth, dried rose petals, tar and liquorice, dried cherry, tobacco and Assam tea. Opens with a lovely richness to the texture, medium-bodied yet quickly builds to firm, grippy, almost austere tannins that creep up from nowhere - that classic iron fist in a velvet glove. The mid-palate exudes umami, iron fillings, brown spices and bags of liquorice! Tremendous depth of flavour, with extraordinary length and precision, this is a classic example of Serralunga. That sturdy structure, fleshy fruit and liquorice/savoury edges - cracking! Ageing beautifully.

October 31, 2019 - RPM Italian White Truffle Dinner (RPM Italian, Chicago, IL): This is wide open and aromatic with savory tones of red cherries, raspberries, dark red berries, balsamico, roasted herbs, licorice, tobacco, dusty notes, tar, and some violets. This is just firing on all cylinders with a real expressiveness and depth. The Full bodied feel is refined and balanced with crisp, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This is drinking beautifully and is right in it's drinking zone. This does have a slight touch of balsamic note that is distracting. Otherwise, this is a gorgeous and sexy Barolo.

December 21, 2018 - Annual Tasting Group Holiday Party (I Nonni, St. Paul, MN): Drank a small glass over 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I didn't take any notes on this and kind of lost track of it. Good, but don't recall it being remarkable. 90ish pts.
