June 18, 2021 - Stood up for seven days. Three hour slow oxidation. One hour decant. 6cm ullage with a slightly raised and saturated cork, which broke upon opening. Considerable sediment. Tawny in the glass and clearly showing the signs that it’s almost 60 years of age. Roses, tar, rusty nails, mushrooms, Bresaola - aged dry cured beef - and a touch of salinity all reveal themselves on the nose. A bone dry and very austere palate showing almost exclusively tertiary characteristics of dried earth, beef consommé, and truffles with remarkably fresh acidity for a wine of this age.

June 18, 2021 - Utterly crystal clear. Wood, beef consommé, brown mushrooms, tar, and smoke on the nose. Sweet strawberry and wood on the palette. Vibrant acidity. Blown away by the sweet strawberry

November 25, 2015 - Quite a few friends visited for the actual birthday sipping ’n snacking event at home. The 24 previous days and the next five days only warm-ups and warm-downs, respectively. Whew, getting old is hard work…but we try to do it with style!

The last, but certainly not least as it rated WOTN, wine of the evening to commemorate how old we are! As it was inexpensive, we thought let's take a punt on a birth year Barolo. We kicked it right out of the park. Wow!!!

Brownish red on the eye as expected and appreciated. The nose was so tight after 30 minutes breathing in the bottle - unexpected - that we decided to decant...as carefully as we had to be when opening. Aromas of lavish ripe red fruit, sufficient alcohol and toasted almonds. Wow, she captivated the audience with a jiggle of this and a sway of that...the vibration of her moves was more than anticipated yet clearly enjoyed by all. Ah, yes, the palate. Mellow, yet powerful, mature red fruit, subtle, yet ready to rock tannins, and a medium to full-bodied, yet dainty, mouthfeel. The warmth of this 53 year old glowed for another hour as several of us slowly basked in her giving glory. As we type and despite the spicy sauces of the evening, we still can feel the finish. Awesome!!! We bought the vintage for fun with guarded expectations of the wine in favour of the label. Et voila, we got both!!! We think she has a few more years in her as well!

May 4, 2013 - On opening it didn't smell great - echoed by the initial glass poured which was badly faded, a little cloudy in both taste and hue.

However after a while in the glass, the nose has cleaned up, and whilst a little 'tinny', is showing some faded nebbiolo fruit.

On the palate, it's improved yet more, with quite a bit of complexity jncluding some unusual 'raspberry ripple' fruit along with the more normal faintly orangey fruit and some spice, albeit with a somewhat short finish. Acidity gives some grip without unbalancing the wine.
