October 30, 2021 - Amber in color, fresh pineapple and apples on the nose, 0 acidity now but smooth with a buttery note. Some brioche. Likely past it’s prime :(

February 7, 2020 - Drink now! Acidity fading. Gentle lemon.

November 4, 2019 - Great note by CSIMM (as usual). I’ll say that the Mel Brooks metaphor is certainly valid.

Where we differ is that I think this wine is breaking down. Yes the (100% new French) oak has integrated but the alcohol levels on these wines are really heady and it shows here with 9 years of bottle age. I find not quite enough acidity to make this go the distance. Secondary (or tertiary if we’re being technical) notes of raw hazelnut, orange marmalade are there with fruit to spare, but I think the seams are starting to split on this bottle. Drink now and over the next year.

January 19, 2019 - Wren Hop Dinner: For a Chardonnay that is a decade from vintage, this had a beautifully elongated stretch of flavors that drove across the palate with surprising verve and tension. Showing some age with the slightest hints of oxidation, but notably balanced and smooth. This wine never died out over the course of the evening (3+ hours), persisting with its fruit, frame, and drive all the while in the glass exposed to open air.

Bruised lemon, hazelnut, marmalade, burnt sugar, creme brûlée, and hints of coriander. Finished pleasantly dry with the slightest tinge of lamp oil on the back end. Excellent grip and energy given its age.

Paired extraordinarily well with a butternut squash soup, cutting its richness with the dryer, more nutty peripheral notes of the wine.

Drink now and over the next year or two, though who knows how long this could last. It’s the Mel Brooks of Chardonnays, where an old actor comes up in conversation and you ask, “He’s still alive?... I thought he died a while back...”... and then you Google it just to make sure.

A wine I revisited throughout the night, holding up even after my having gone through a number of fuller-bodied Pinot Noirs and heavier fare. Quite the accomplishment for the varietal. A wine that’s 90 years old in domestic Chardonnay years, but looks 50, and will probably live to be 110. (Don’t quote me on the math folks; using rough numbers here).......

Side by side with a 2016 Wren Hop Ritchie Chardonnay, the Savior showed no overt oak influence (no surprise), while the Ritchie’s current vanilla and cinnamon-dusted apple pie crust profile was in full effect. A fun comparison.

February 9, 2013 - Nice golden yellow, very visible glycerin legs. I swear a bit of cream soda on the nose. Rich lemon cream flavors with a touch of oak. Beautiful mouth-filling sensation without being too heavy. Nice acidity complements the rich flavor profile.
