January 15, 2024 - 2010 Barolo Tasting; 1/14/2024-1/15/2024: The '10 Rocche is a stunning wine in the making. Of the 8 2010s tasted side by side, the Rocche was one of the two most reticent wines in my experience (alongside the Conterno Francia). I would be in no rush to open bottles here.

The nose was nicely perfumed, with super sweet dark red berry fruit, orange peel, fresh red roses, and sweet spices, just an incredibly attractive, sweet and primary bouquet. Compared to other wines in this tasting, the Vietti Rocche & Sandrone Le Vigne maybe showed a touch more modern, but barely so, and that shows up a bit in a note of sweet spices. On the palate, the Rocche was medium plus in body, one of the more powerful wines tasted, with sweet red berry fruit, fresh roses, sweet spice, and orange peel, and a lot of tannin that is very refined but will benefit from another 5-10 years or more to integrate.

This is a super promising wine, but is one of the 2010s I would probably not open except to check in on it. It'll be a lot better in 5-10 years.

November 4, 2022 - This was served blind, and was a last minute replacement for a 1996 Gaja that was off. So, the Vietti was replaced, and with even more contrast, it was put right in between two 1996 Giacosa Barbarescos. So, it stuck out as it lacked the aeration those 2 wines enjoyed, plus it's just a younger wine. This is the darkest of the three wines in the glass, and the fruit exhibits that same dark-toned quality. Dark cherry, juicy, with tar, notable acidity and stony tannin. As the dinner came to a close, it did seem the wine was starting to uncoil and ideally it needed a lot of air to show.

January 24, 2022 - This one was kinda tight on the nose. Very closed at this time even after decantation.

However the palate was smooth with medium tannins and great acidity. Red fruit, some dark berries, juicy plums, smoke and leather. A powerful Barolo with finesse and elegance at the same time.

It feels like it has much more to give - in due time.
Keep it in the celler for now.

December 6, 2020 - The 2010 Rocche is an explosive, concentrated Barolo that also shows great finesse, as I've come to expect from this wine across vintages. The nose is a bit restrained at this stage, but shows cool-toned aromas of dark red cherry fruit, violets, spices, fresh herbs, fresh roses, and licorice. On the palate, it is explosive and powerful, but with almost no perception of tannin. I found very sweet dark red and purple toned fruit, spices, and fresh herbs, with a perfectly smooth, almost thick texture, showing great finesse and no tannin from beginning to end. The texture is richly concentrated and almost thicker than a typical wine, that it buries the tannins. Sharp acidity adds freshness and despite the power of the wine, it remains energetic. This is a phenomenal wine that is very young today and not very expressive, but is impressive for its texture and combination of power and finesse. Based on this showing, I wouldn't recommend opening a bottle for 5-10+ years, other than for curiosity's sake.
