August 30, 2011 - Tar and some sweet roses. A bit smoky and rich but bitter black earth and dark leather. Somewhat reductive Somewhat losing acidity. Sour cherries.

August 26, 2011 - Stewed cherries, red flowers, earthy musky soil on the nose. Sour fruits, acidity is fading, sweaty socks, and coffee notes.

August 26, 2011 - Ming's 30th - a night of 1981 wines and more (Asia Grand, Odeon Towers): My favourite amongst the reds, this showed the magic of an aged Barolo even if it was clearly not form the strongest vintage. There was no mistaking what this was. It started with a beautiful Piedmontese nose of chocolate, damp wood, soy sauce and spice surrounded by deep, slightly heady aromas of dried dates, cherries and figs, all wreathed by classic notes of rose and tar. The palate was just about right - still bright with acidity, but with tannins that had softened out, it showed lovely earthy flavours specked with wood spice, smoky tar and flowers floating around a delicious mouthful of sour cherries as the wine moved into a nice fresh finish that ended with a touch of savoury earth and soy notes ringed with a little halo of rose petals. Just lovely. Everything was beautifully integrated at this stage, and the wine was a delight to drink.
