Community Tasting Notes 2

October 27, 2014 - Not complicated, but does the job as a balanced and harmonious spätburgunder. Really attractive and it`s difficult to put the glass down. Did anyone say "red riesling"?

A small waterish patch on midpalate and a somewhat short finish steals a point or two, but this is a sure rebuy for me.

September 9, 2013 - Tasted at the winery 10 days after it was bottled.
Surprisingly extracted for a PN from this far north. Old World style with dirt, tannins more pronounced than its classic red fruit flavors of cherry, black raspberry. It could use a few years still for the extract to mellow and blend into complexity. I might score higher at that time -- hard to predict (for me) given its mellow fruit.
This Ortswein is smoother, a bit lighter with more finesse than the Gutswein version without the Westhofener name on the label. The taste itself though is about the same between the two. The grapes for both of Wittmann's pinot noirs come from the same vineyard. The grapes picked for this Westhofener are the better ones and aged longer in (old) oak.
