Community Tasting Notes 9

April 7, 2021 - Notes after four hours open. Medium ruby color with a slight haze. The cork was in pristine condition (especially for MI) and the wine still looked youthful.
Medium-powered nose with a lot of funky mushroom, meat, and dirty boots that make me expect something complex and penetrating. In contrast, the palate delivers a fairly light and monotonous bouquet of flavors. Not really getting any “Burgundy magic”, and I could easily mistake this for New Zealand or Oregon PN. Short finish. Nothing really wrong or flawed with this bottle, it’s just a mediocre wine at best.

November 11, 2020 - Flawed: tasted like mold, some funk, sour / vinegar, weak and watery, a collection of broken pieces with nowhere to go. I'm neither for or against controversial winemaker Ray Walker, but someone was quite careless, and obviously there were poor manufacturing or cellar conditions. Three other bottles 2013 Les Chaffots in similar condition, so this isn't about a particular bottle. Avoid.

May 7, 2020 - Pale ruby, subtle nose that starts out funky (but blows off quickly) followed by cherry, Asian spice, pomegranate and raspberry, ripe plump fruit on the attack with tart cherry, earth, spice, and mild tannins, medium length finish with chalk infused cherry, earth, some green notes but long, lingering primary red fruits, may have opened this one too soon

Note: Second bottle shipped directly from Ray to me, first bottle was horribly flawed and smelt and tasted of fermented cabbage, since this bottle is heads and shoulders better, I'm guessing a bad barrel is to blame

April 14, 2020 - Drinking very well. Light bodied with good character and harmony. Likely at peak or plateau - recommend drinking now.

December 6, 2019 - This was really nice, ripe raspberry, lots of pure red fruit. Can’t remember much else but I was impressed.
