Community Tasting Notes 4

July 17, 2023 - No numerical rating as the wine wasn't opened under favorable circumstances.
Mid-shoulder fill level which isn't too bad for a 76 year old wine.
The cork came out relatively intact in two pieces.
The hue was a little paler than expected but not alarmingly so.
classic St Julien nose with fading fruit, cigarbox and gravel.
Served a little too warm, so difficult to truly evaluate the balance of the wine. A shame.

April 22, 2023 - Drank for dad: Absolutely extraordinary - alive, fruits, finish. The whole package. Also drank the 77 and this was easily the wine of the night- just delicious.

December 4, 2022 - What a heavenly, sweetly fruited nose the 47 Talbot shows as soon as the cork is pulled. Glorious candied redcurrant, cranberry, and juniper alongside mellow cardamom and cedar with a touch of unsmoked tobacco. Fragrant, warm, complete, the little pop of volatile acidity freshening the nose further. This is more linear and fruit focused on the palate but… that beautiful, succulent fruit rendered in a supremely elegant profile.

October 15, 2016 - Late Saturday night gathering (Adam's House in DC): Exceptional condition bottle that I acquired from Christies a while back. Beautiful nose displaying sweet red fruits, stewed cherry, pine sap, cabernet green, cedar, leather, sous bois and a hint of VA. Initially slightly angular and thin palate but with air, nice gains fruit weight. Subtle yet decadent red fruits and VA driven palate impression, fully integrated sweet palate, bright acidity and freshness and lovely long finish that ends with a hint of VA. This is why some of us go crazy over really old clarets. Paul correctly guesses St. Julien but thinks from the 30s, Justin correctly guesses the vintage but at Pauillac, both incredibly impressive.
