February 5, 2024 - Restrained nose giving up red fruit and dark chocolate, tannins M and acidity M-. Blackberries and vanilla oak, with late sweetness developing.
I deduced.. Left Bank 1999. Why was I fooled? The blend is Cab heavy! Unique blend of 35% Cab, 35% Cab Franc and 30% Merlot, as not many Right Bankers have so much Cabernet!
It is due to its high Cab, that Figeac is often described as the most Médoc-like in St-Emilion. Located in the north-west of the appellation with its vineyards adjoining those of Cheval Blanc.
Whilst generally considered less opulent than the 2000s, the 2001 vintage has been described as “more old-fashioned”. It has been noted that producers who aimed for more of a classic claret generally performed better than those who chased a more Parker-style of wine!!!
The Bordeaux 2001 vintage was one with a wet summer, but August and September were dry. The summer rains heavily affected estates in the left bank and some of the wines suffered from dilution.
Right bank wines overall fared better with St. Emilion and Pomerol, in particular, benefitting from the dry September. Despite some wines having a touch of greenness, a clear indicator of a difficult growing season, many had plenty of fresh fruit, elegance and good tannin.
Thank you to brother SKT for sharing this on our Leisurely Monday session at our clubhouse, Butchers Table Hartamas. We had this together with RN and M, WMK, LMC and L too. What an evening!

October 31, 2023 - Bordeaux 2000 & 2001 Horizontal (Piccolino, Exchange Square, London): Bell pepper, fresh tobacco leaf and lurking just behind the faintest hint of blood orange. With some air there's a suggestion of charred toast and a little pineapple stalk. On the palate this feels like there is plenty of time ahead, tannins not fully resolved but very fine. Really gets going with our starters when they arrive.

October 31, 2023 - Wow the nose of blackcurrants on this leaps out and smacks you in the face. A deep blood red wine that is actually quite eloquent with lightness and harmonious balance. This is one that is more fruit forward with the cooling graphite coming second. Still youthful but lovely to drink now.

October 31, 2023 - Neil's 2000 & 2001 Bordeauxs (Piccolino, London): Glorious nose, simply breathtaking. Could sit with this all night, and perhaps actually this is what this wine needed as it felt incredibly youthful with only hints of what is to come. You feel as if it could go on forever. Full on dark fruit, rich and ripe cassis, and at some point I write down burnt toast crust as one the aromas but this is all about the highest quality fruit. I think it's too young, drinkable for sure - eminently so, smooth and long - but I just want to wait. I should have set some aside in a spare glass all night to see what happened, but you know how it is... Lovely, but patience needed in my view.

October 31, 2023 - Neil’s 2000/01 Bordeaux @ Piccolino: Mid to full ruby. Ripe blackcurrant nose. A cool edge. Nicely rich on the attack, more linear through the mid palate with good acidity on the finish. Slight dip in the middle, but long. Fills out with air. Lovely. ****1/2
