Community Tasting Notes 3

March 22, 2019 - The 2011 vintage is one of the best vintages since 2001 (which was an historic vintage). Tannat is a hard wine - tannic, long-lived, unfamiliar to many. But this wine ... THIS wine is wonderful. Still a bit tight, but offering blackberry, plum, balsamic, rosemary and cedar. Tannat is always a bit of a heavy hitter, but while a big wine, in the hands of this winemaker the tannins are balanced and aren’t rubbing the palate. Aged 20 months in 50% new French oak, only 10 cases were made. The finish is a bit spicy - an interesting feature. Almost clean; very little sediment. 13% alc. Unfortunately, I failed to note the food enjoyed the wine but likely with cheeses. Recommended.

November 5, 2014 - Mixed Blinds (My Place - Washington, DC): Medium purple colored. Deep, rich and complex on the nose, with blackberries and blueberries along with a lot of tilled soil and graphite, some notes of anise and campfire wood. Firm tannins on the palate, the acid adds brightness. The tart blackberry and blueberry fruit is delicious, and it’s accented by notes of black licorice, black pepper, black licorice, dark chocolate shavings, soil and charred wood. Delicious, and it opens up nicely in the glass, but this has serious structure for aging. Tannat has been making waves in Virginia for a while, and this is one reason why. I’d love to try it again in four to six years. Aged 20 months in 50% new French oak.

August 7, 2014 - Tannat is another rising red star in Virginia wine. Aged 50% in new French oak and 50% in neutral French oak. Dense with heavy tannins. Loaded with blueberry jam flavors and a backbone of white pepper.
