Medium-deep yellow color. Very light and rather mute nose with delicate aromas of apricot-driven stone fruits, some chemical nail polish remover notes, a little bit of exotic spice and a hint of fragrant floral character. The wine is dry-ish to off-dry on the palate with full body, rather modest acidity and rich flavors of pineapple, apricot, overripe apple and a little bit of honey. The wine has some obvious weight, but the lack of acidity makes the wine come across a bit dull and fat. The finish is even a bit sweeter than the midpalate with rich flavors of yellow stone fruits, some wizened apple, a little bit of honey and a hint of pineapple. Although the acidity pushes a little bit better through, it is still a bit too low, making the aftertaste lack intensity and the wine finish short.
I originally thought that this was a new world Viognier - fooled by the oily body, peachy yellow fruit flavors and hints of floral aromatics. I guess I was not that far off? Anyway, Viogniers aside, this is actually a pretty typical Alsatian Pinot Gris with some residual sugar and lots of ripe, yellow-toned fruit. The wine is a bit too easy on the acid side, which makes the wine a bit heavy and flabby, lacking freshness and intensity. That means you might want to serve the wine pretty cool and with dishes that have at least a bit sweetness (or chilies or something else hot) that would strip away that residual sugar sweetness a bit. Priced according to its quality at 13,99€.
