January 15, 2023 - By the glass via Coravin at Les 110 de Taillevent , Paris.
Young but also impressive as a wine and punches a lot higher than the label suggests. Nutty and oxidative of course, soft richness , bit of balsamic at times and full on textbook beauty of Madeira. Very polished too. 92

December 26, 2022 - Fresh bottle which tasted better than the last without the distraction of sweeter wines to compete. It matched both Stilton cheese and poached pear in Port with equal aplomb. CHP 94 pts

December 25, 2022 - Saline, minerally, light and fine with beautiful acidity this exhibited complex flavours of lime marmalade, toffee, chocolate, cough linctus, pear drops laced with honey. Elegant and classy, with an exceptionally fine and lingering finish this was fully complete and satisfying. CHP 92 pts

November 10, 2022 - Pale in colour and medium sweet, this had flavours of toffee and nuts developing cream. Enormous length, depth and dimension, really complex. 94 pts

September 3, 2022 - Made with Boal grapes sourced from Campanário, Estreito da Calheta and Prazeres. The grapes are fermented for approximately 3 days. Then the must is rectified to approx. 20% ABV with 96% ABV grape spirit to halt the fermentation, after which the fortified wine is transferred to old French oak casks. The wine is aged in Canteiros, ie. in warm warehouses, in which the wines age in casks that are never topped up. The wine is blended from different casks resulting in a wine that is stylistically approximately 10 years old. Bottled filtered. Labeled medium-sweet. 19,2% alcohol, 90 g/l residual sugar, 6,59 g/l acidity, pH 3,47 and 0,87 g/l VA.

Luminous amber color. The nose feels surprisingly dry and oxidative for a 10 yo Boal with aromas of roasted nuts, some notes of slivered almonds, a little bit of cooked cream, light notes of hay, a sharp and salty hint of rancio and a touch of coffee. The wine feels much fruitier on the palate than how it did aromatically, although the overall feel is surprisingly fresh, lively and zippy despite the moderately full body and medium-sweet-to-sweet overall taste. There are rich flavors of apple jam, some creamy notes of panna cotta, a little bit of ripe nectarine, light raisiny nuances of Sultanas, a hint of honeyed richness and a nutty touch of rancio. The high acidity lends good sense of freshness and focus to the wine. The finish is lively and quite acid-driven on the palate with a rather lengthy aftertaste of lemony zip, some caramel tones, a little bit of honeyed richness, light grapey nuances, a hint of dried nectarine and an oxidative touch of walnuts.

The nose didn't leave a particularly impressive impression, but on the palate the wine turned out to be a nice, balanced and rich Boal with good acidic zip. Perhaps the overall style is a bit light and straightforward for a 10 yo Boal, but not in a particularly bad way - the wine just feels somewhat linear compared to some other 10 yo Boals I've tasted. This is good, but I honestly think this wine doesn't offer anything that Barbeito's 10 yo Malvasia wouldn't do better - that's where my money's at. Nevertheless, at 25€ this wine is priced according to its quality.
