May 7, 2022 - One of the producers of the vintage. Would argue the wine is seamless at this point. Great balance and just delicious. 93/94

January 7, 2021 - He says "how about some Mugneret?" and I say "of course". He emerges with a bottle, "what do you want first, the good news or the bad news?" I opt for the good and he replies "it's Clos de Vougeot" and I say "so it's 2004"....

Starts off a little green, but opens up nicely to pretty berries, complex earthiness and voluminous spice. Aromas of celery salt, anise, mace, sichuan pepper, smoked meat, dank mossy forest, dark cherry and overripe strawberry. Silky tannins, a little tangy and light on the mid-palate. Finishes full of character and texture, with notes of diverse tart berries, delicate torrefaction and smoky spice. Not on the rich side of grand cru red Burgundy, but showing the exotic side, and one might peg it Vosne. Lovely and probably in a sweet spot, it is hard to see this getting much better.

I know I had a 2004 M-G grand cru a few years back with the same friend, and though I was pretty sure it was the Clos Vougeot, he thought otherwise. If it was the 2004 Vougeot, this was a much better showing.

March 9, 2019 - La Paulée de New York Gala Dinner (Pier Sixty - New York NY): Small glass, brief note. Very charming array of red fruits. Age appropriate level of maturity without any bitter/ green character or the advanced maturation of so many 2004s. Wonderful balance with good weight and length.

October 20, 2016 - TTTG - The Resurrection (brief notes; blind wines) (Granby, CT): So much more open and ready than the other wine in the flight [Robert Arnoux 2004 Clos Vougeot]. Dark berry and liquor on the nose, pine needles. Very pretty nose. Silky texture and finish. Slight green notes (2004?) but not in a distracting way at all. Very good. Great flight.

October 20, 2016 - I last had this wine blind a couple of years ago, and it seemed like it might be emerging from the infamous green taint of so many 2004 Burgundies. Last night it was served blind again, and it moved even further away from the green and more to the sous bois/earthy/dried leaves element of mature Burgundy that I love so much. There was still quite a lot of fruit, and the palate had a velvety element on the front end. There was a bit of acid sticking out on the finish, so not sure where that might have been going, but overall it was a very enjoyable wine. Consensus around the table was positive, so maybe there is hope after all.
