Community Tasting Notes 17

  • Charlie C Does not like this wine:

October 3, 2019 - I have never found the Novy Zins up to the level of their syrahs (or the Siduri pinots). This is totally over the hill. Musty and muddled on the nose and the palate (not corked). The fruit is harsh and unattractive. The alcoholic burn carries across the palate. I know it's 15 years old, but a Carlisle zin from this fruit would not have fallen apart like this. Not fair to score it this point.

June 28, 2014 - Dark and thick, minimal signs of aging in the glass. Excessively over-ripe bouquet, difficult to get past the alcoholic singe. Port, black tea, grappa, sweet heat, searing whiskey notes, dried sage, tingling ethanol, fire breath acetylene. Simpson-esque insanity pepper juice. The envelope was pushed too far - subtract 3% on the ABV and we might have something.

May 11, 2012 - On the downhill. Got one more that hopefully has held up better. Somewhat flat and fruit was muted.

December 25, 2011 - PnP, post Christmas wine. Highly glyceric, dark red to purple in the glass. Heady, full bodied, ultra thick and boozy jam bomb at 15.9%. Lots of heat, tar, oak, melted raisins, pruny-date compote, black bramble berry with confected boysenberry notes. I agree with other notes that I wish this was dialed back a percent or two on the ABV. This was made in the heyday of the ultra ripe over extracted zins. While showing a lot of dark fruits and good raw material, the heat and alcohol tend to detract somewhat from the experience. Lots of fruit with some secondary notes showing, it's the elements of heat holding this back. All the stuffing is there, good structure, balance and very long finish.

April 8, 2011 - What a shame Adam couldn't get to these grapes earlier...neither could Mike Officer, as his version of this wine also came in at 15.9% and ended up jammy according to some others on CT. The fruit tries desperately to push through and strut it's stuff, and there are moments when I feel "Wow, these are some quality grapes here..." but then the ETOH defeats it. It's just over the top, and I can't imagine this is what the vyd manager wanted his vines to show.
