Community Tasting Notes 2

April 16, 2020 - I brought this bottle back from Madeira fully intent on burying it for at least 15 years, so I squirrelled it away at the back of a crawl space behind some old wetsuits and kayaking equipment. Well, I was supposed to be in Portugal last week for a wine and surf trip, but since the pandemic shot that down, I went digging for this bottle. Sure it would be epic in 40 years, but it's gorgeous now, and I'm glad I enjoyed it. Beautiful nose of dried fruits, candied orange peel, spiced apricot jam, with salted almonds, sugar cane, even some herbal/sage tones. Full and plush but crisp acidity on the palate; the balance is pristine. Yellow plums, orange marmalade, with shaved ginger, savory earth and dried herb tones, nougat, almond, clove. It opens up so nicely over the course of two weeks or so. A bottle of mid-1800s D'Oliveiras Verdelho, tasted at the cellar, is the best wine I've ever tasted. If you age this for 150 years, I'm confident it will be just as exquisite - if the planet is still alive then.

February 4, 2016 - Madeira Pilgrimage; 2/1/2016-2/4/2016 (Madeira): Smells of yellow apples and floral perfume. On the palate this is pretty and elegant with complex fruit flavors (peach nectar, juicy yellow apples, apricot jam), along with a host of non fruit elements: tropical flowers, almonds, sea salt and white tea. Complex, beautiful stuff. at 30 Euros, I had to buy a bottle for the cellar.
