December 24, 2015 - Getting a bit past it but it depends what you like. This was disgorged a couple of years ago so newer releases may be fresher.

September 11, 2015 - Drunk with Dan, Lucy, Rob, Donald and Vicky (who's recently become a Master of Wine).

Went down fairly well. Perfectly mature.

August 17, 2014 - Had this at Hawksmoore after dinner.

Bit drunk by then but I really enjoyed this. Raisins and cashews etc. No need to wait. See my previous notes.

July 7, 2014 - I still enjoyed this (see my previous note) but this tasted a little older than my previous bottle. Still a good deal.

July 1, 2014 - Had a bit of a time getting the cork out which seemed to be stuck; suggesting that this was not disgorged to order but has been off its lees for quite a few years.

At first I was worried that I'd made a mistake as this did have a pronounced cidery smell and seemed a bit thin on the palate. Over time this opened up and I realised that this was not trying to be a big nutty style fizz that you might find in old bottles of Bollinger Grande Annee. Instead this was all red apples and toffee with dried fruits on the nose.

This is certainly one to drink sooner rather than later as it reminds me of a bottle of Belle Epoque that I had a little over 20 years after the vintage. Considering that the Blanc de blancs could go for many years yet, I found the maturity of this wine quite surprising. Nyetimber usually emphasise their library of blanc de blancs back-vintages and they do seem to be fresher; but sometimes it's nice to be able to drink something mature without having to wait 20 years.

This was head and shoulders above the Bollinger Grande Annee 2002 that we had open on the same table and although the Bolly opened up on day two, the Nyetimber '98 was still the better wine of the night.

Overall this has reinforced my opinion that the best value English fizz is to be found in the back-vintages. I think I'm going to have to seek out some of the BdB 1992. : )
