  May 7, 2017 - Dornfelder from Mülheimer Sonnenlay. Aged for 40 months in used barriques. 13,5% alcohol.
  
  Inky, almost completely opaque black cherry color. Dark-toned nose with aromas of aguely peppery spice, crunchy red fruit, some bloody gamey notes and a hint of blackberry. The wine is moderately full-bodied but also quite lively on the palate with balanced, quite high acidity and fruity flavors of ripe dark berries, brambly blackberries, moderate bitterness, some juicy cherry character and a slightest hint of savory old wood. The mouthfeel is very round and gentle. The wine finishes on a ripe, fruity and slightly bitter note with medium-long flavors of ripe dark berries, a little bit of tannic astringency and a slightly more pronounced streak of oak.
  
  A good, balanced and, most of all, surprisingly serious Dornfelder. Normally the Dornfelders I've tasted have been just plain and dull or then drenched in excessive new oak. This, however, avoids both of those pitfalls and comes across as surprisingly smooth, balanced and crunchy with good emphasis on the purity of fruit. The wine is not the most complex of wines, but I'm quite sure it's next to impossible to make one out of Dornfelder. Overall I'm positively surprised by this wine; somewhat pricey at 18,50€, but I'm willing to accept it as the wine is actually so well-made. Recommended.
